Chennai: An argument ensued between Union Health Minister Dr Mandaviya and DMK MPs in Lok Sabha over the construction of AIIMS, Madurai on Friday. After the argument, Congress and DMK MPs stage walked out from Lok Sabha in protest.
On Friday, replying to a supplementary question on AIIMS Madurai, Mandaviya said medical courses of the institute are going on while Rs 1,900 crore has been earmarked for constructing the infrastructure.
When the DMK members said the AIIMS Madurai is not ready, Mr Mandaviya accused them of giving wrong information to the House and misleading the people.
Health Minister Mandaviya said, "I won't allow such medical colleges to operate where there is no adequate faculty and infrastructure. Work is underway on establishing AIIMS Madurai. Don’t make health an issue of politics."

Tamil Nadu MPs for a long time have been demanding to speed up the construction of AIIMS, Madurai. Though PM laid the foundation stone for AIIMS near Madurai in 2019, the tenders were floated to identify consultant for construction of AIIMS Madurai only last month.
It maybe recalled that CPI-M and Congress MPs from Tamil Nadu mocked the claims made by BJP President JP Nadda that 95 per cent of the work for the AIIMS, Madurai was over last year. They held a placard on a empty piece of land earmarked for setting up AIIMS, Madurai.
