Chennai Corporation To Deploy 1,000 Workers To Close Potholes After Death Of Biker In Anna Salai

Chennai: A day after a techie died in a road mishap after he lost control over his two-wheeler due to a pothole and was run over by a bus, the Chennai Corporation on Tuesday decided to close potholes by deploying 1,000 workers across the capital. The 32-year-old Muhammed Yunus died after he lost the balance of his two-wheeler due to a pothole and fell on the ground while an MTC bus ran over him near Little Mount of Saidapet on Monday. 

The Guindy Traffic police registered a case against the driver of the MTC bus and later arrested him. The Corporation too barricaded the pothole near the accident spot and later closed the pothole.

Following the incident, the CCTV footage of the incident was widely circulated on social media which put the government, corporation, and the highways department under the scanner for not closing the potholes, especially during the monsoon. 

According to a report on The Hindu, the Chennai Corporation on Tuesday decided to close all the potholes in 15 zones after receiving funds of Rs 10 lakh for each zone. They will also press 1,000 workers into this service. The Corporation has also instructed officials to identify damaged roads and potholes with more than 40 mm of the hole will be closed in the city.

Meanwhile, the traffic investigation police wrote to the Highways department seeking an explanation for the mishap. Reports also suggest that the Tamil Nadu Highways Department has also given a complaint against a telecom company for creating a pothole on Anna Salai, which led to the death of the techie.
