Bengal BJP Workers Take To Streets In Siliguri After Minor Girl Killed For Resisting Assault

The prime suspect has been arrested and the stone with which the girl was allegedly attacked has also been recovered, police said.

New Delhi: The BJP workers in West Bengal took to streets over the incident of alleged sexual assault and murder of a minor girl in Siliguri earlier this week, news agency ANI reported. The incident came to light after the body of a 15-year-old girl was found in a dilapidated house in Matigara area on Monday evening.

According to a report by news agency PTI, the incident took place when the girl, a Class 11 student, was returning home from school. Police said as per preliminary investigation, it has been found that the accused intercepted her on her way back from school and she was killed during an attempt of sexual assault.

The prime suspect has been arrested and the stone with which the girl was allegedly attacked has also been recovered, police said, as reported by PTI.

“The minor girl was murdered at an abandoned place in Siliguri's Matigara area on Monday, as she was returning home from her school. The person who allegedly attempted to sexually assault her and then killed her when she resisted, has been arrested,” ANI quoted Siliguri Metropolitan police, DCP Abhishek Gupta, as saying.

According to CCTV footage from nearby areas and inputs from the locals, police zeroed in on the prime suspect, Muhammed Abbas (19). A case has been registered against him under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and attempt to rape and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

Meanwhile, the Gorkha Sewa Sena had called a 12-hour bandh in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts on Saturday, PTI reported. The bandh, which was supported by the taxi associations of Kurseong, Darjeeling and Kalimpong, demanded the accused be tried in a fast-track court.

Earlier on Thursday, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) observed a 12-hour shutdown in Siliguri over the incident, PTI reported.
