Rajasthan Woman Abducted, Killed & Burnt By Own Kin For Marrying Against Their Wishes

A woman was killed and her body burned by her family members for marrying against their wishes in Rajasthan's Jhalawar.

A 20-year-old woman was killed by her own family for marrying against their wishes to a man of her choice. The shocking incident occurred in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district.

The woman's family members abducted her in front of her husband. She was then killed, and her body was burnt at a cremation ground, news agency PTI reported. After recovering the burnt body from the pyre, police initiated a probe into the case of honour killing.

"It is a case of honour killing as the parents of the woman, Shimla Kushwah, had raised objections to her getting married to Ravindra Bheel, who belongs to a different caste," Harnwadashahaji DSP Jai Prakash Atal told PTI.

Investigations into the matter revealed that the woman, a year ago, had married a man named Ravi Bheel, of which her family did not approve of. The couple had fled to Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, where they got married.

According to media reports, the couple, in order to escape the wrath of the woman's family members, kept switching between different locations. Of late, they had been living in Jhalawar’s Sourti village.

However, as soon as her family members received information that the couple would be visiting a bank in a neighbouring village, located in Baran district, Kushwaha's Kushwah’s father, brother and three of their relatives came there and abducted her.

The couple, on Thursday, came to Harnawadshahaji in Baran to withdraw money from a bank, PTI reported.

Bheel informed the local police about his wife's abduction, following which Jawar police station in Jhalawar was alerted about the incident.

"Jawar police then rushed to the spot, recovered Kushwah’s body from a cremation ground, and handed it over to Baran police for investigation," Jawar Deputy Superintendent of Police Jarnail Singh stated.

By the time the complaint was filed and police was alerted, her family had already killed and cremated her. When the cops reached the spot, the victim's body was burnt by more than 80 per cent, the report said.

Her family members had also fled the spot and are currently on the run.

Police have booked 10-12 people in connection with the honour killing case, including the women's parents and brother.

A case under sections of 103 (1) (murder), 238 (disappearance of evidence) and 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention of all) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was lodged at the Harnawdashahaji police station, police told PTI.

The woman's burnt remains were sent to the forensics for further investigation after which the body was handed over to the husband's family.
