Congress Suspends Rape Accused Former Rajasthan MLA Over 'Immoral Activities'

Rajasthan Congress leader and former MLA Mewaram Jain was suspended by the party for his involvement in "immoral activities."

Congress party's Rajasthan unit suspended one of its leaders and former MLAs, Mewaram Jain from party's primary membership for his involvement in "immoral activities" on Saturday, reported news agency ANI.

The move comes after the former Barmer MLA was accused in a gang rape case  and two video clips, allegedly featuring him in an obscene act went viral on social media, according to a report by the Times of India. 

After the two video emerged, a new twist was added to the old case that involved a complex web of allegations including sexual abuse, sextortion, blackmailing, and money laundering.

In a press release by Rajasthan Congress on Saturday, party's state unit chief Govind Singh Dotasra said: "Mewaram Jain (Ex-MLA Barmer) has been suspended from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect in view of his involvement in immoral activities which is a clear indication of a breach of discipline under the constitution of the Congress party. 

After the video clips went viral on Friday, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party came down heavily on the grand old party. Union minister Kailash Choudhary said protectors had become predators under the previous government, which earned the state the dubious distinction of being the leader in atrocities against women, reported TOI.
