Mann Government Ushers in a New Dawn for the Differently-Abled

To streamline access to central and state government welfare schemes, the Maan government is rolling out the Unique Disability ID (UDID) system.

The Maan government, under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is redefining social justice with groundbreaking initiatives aimed at empowering the differently-abled community. Recognizing them as real heroes who overcome numerous challenges to excel in life, the government is taking bold steps to enhance their opportunities and quality of life.

Government Jobs for the Differently-Abled

In a significant move, the Mann government has identified vacant posts under the disability quota across various government departments. To ensure fair employment opportunities, the government has initiated direct recruitment for 1,754 positions and promotions for 556 posts under the backlog category. These vacancies will soon be filled, bringing greater job security and dignity to the differently-abled community in Punjab.

Unique Disability ID for Easy Access to Benefits

To streamline access to central and state government welfare schemes, the government is rolling out the Unique Disability ID (UDID) system. This initiative enables beneficiaries to receive pensions, training, employment assistance, and medical aid without bureaucratic hassles. Additionally, a dedicated Disability Cell is facilitating all government schemes through a single-window system, ensuring faster and smoother service delivery.

Scholarships for Differently-Abled Students

Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, and the Punjab government is making sure no child is left behind. To encourage students with disabilities to pursue education, scholarships worth INR 3.37 crore have been disbursed to 12,607 students in the last year alone. The government remains committed to making education accessible and inclusive for every child in Punjab.

Subsidized and Free Travel for the Differently-Abled

Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, several measures have been taken to facilitate mobility for differently-abled individuals. Visually impaired citizens and their escorts are now entitled to free bus travel. Additionally, all persons with disabilities receive a 50% discount on fares for Punjab Roadways and PRTC buses. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the government allocated INR 2.19 crore, benefiting over 7.5 lakh passengers with subsidized or free travel.

Financial Support Through Pension Schemes

Ensuring financial stability, the Mann government has extended pension benefits to 2.65 lakh differently-abled individuals under the state pension scheme. In 2024-25, INR 278.17 crore has been disbursed to eligible beneficiaries, offering them much-needed financial relief and security.

Barrier-Free Infrastructure for Inclusive Growth

Accessibility is a fundamental right, and Punjab is making rapid strides in creating an inclusive environment. The government is investing INR 23.16 crore to make 144 public buildings disabled-friendly, incorporating ramps, elevators, and other essential infrastructure modifications. This initiative aims to enhance the independence and mobility of differently-abled individuals across the state.

With these pioneering efforts, the Mann government is not just implementing policies but bringing a transformative change in the lives of the differently-abled. Punjab is witnessing a new dawn where inclusion, dignity, and empowerment are at the heart of governance. The state continues to set an example for the nation, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of physical ability, has the opportunity to thrive.
