4 Killed, 54 Injured After Massive Dust Storm And Rains In Parts Of Mumbai, Local Trains & Flights Services Hit

Mumbai Weather: The stormy winds and downpour hit the local trains and metro network while the flight services at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were temporarily stopped.

Mumbai on Monday witnessed heavy rain accompanied by dust storms and gusty winds. Videos from several parts of the Maharashtra capital showed reduced visibility amid thunderstorm.

Four people have been killed while 54 others were reported injured after a hoarding fell at the Police Ground Petrol Pump, Eastern Express Highway in Ghatkopar East, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a statement. 

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde arrived at the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse incident to take stock of the situation. The NDRF team is present at the spot and the rescue is underway.

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate rains on Monday afternoon. "Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Palghar and Thane during next 3-4 hours," the IMD said in a statment.

  • The neighbouring areas of Mumbai, including Navi Mumbai and Thane, also received the first rain of the season. 

  • An under-construction metal parking tower collapsed on a road in Wadala area of Mumbai on Monday damaging two vehicles. But there was no report of casualties. The incident occurred at Barkat Ali Naka on the busy Wadala- Antop Hill Road.Two fire engines and a rescue van were rushed to the spot.

  • In another rain-related incident, an under-construction metal parking tower collapsed on a road amid gusty wind in Wadala area, injuring three persons and damaging vehicles.

  • The stormy winds and downpour hit the flight services at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were temporarily suspended for an hour amid unseasonal rains, accompanied by a dust storm. As many as 15 flights were diverted to different airports and the runways operation resumed at 5.03 pm.
  • Local train services on the Central Railway were suspended for more than two hours after the overhead equipment got damaged between two stations due to the storm and rains on Monday. The overhead pole got bent due to strong winds between Thane and Mulund stations, because of which the services were suspended around 4.15 pm, the official from Central Railway said.
  • A tree was uprooted due to strong wind in the Jogeshwari Meghwadi Naka area of Mumbai. One person was injured while the autorickshaw was damaged. 
  • Meanwhile, incidents of trees falling due to gusty wind amid unseasonal rain were reported from several areas in Mumbai. Traffic on roads moved slowly while water-logging was also reported at some places.
  • Earlier on Friday, the Delhi-NCR region had witnessed a massive dust storm accompanied by thunderstorms and rain.
