Shiv Sena MLAs Disqualification: Maharashtra Speaker To Announce Decision On Jan 10, Official Says

Although the Supreme Court had initially set a deadline of December 31, 2023, for the verdict, an extension was granted until January 10, following a request made on December 15.

Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar is set to announce his decision on the disqualification petitions involving Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and multiple MLAs on January 10 (Wednesday), according to Vidhan Bhavan officials, as reported by PTI on Monday.

Although the Supreme Court had initially set a deadline of December 31, 2023, for the verdict, an extension was granted until January 10, following a request made on December 15.

Both factions, led by Shinde and Thackeray, subsequently filed counter petitions invoking anti-defection laws against each other.

The anticipated announcement of the verdict is scheduled for after 4 pm on January 10. Details from the Speaker's office indicate that while the key points of the decision will be revealed on the said date, a comprehensive order will be shared with both groups subsequently.

"The verdict is expected to be out after 4 pm on January 10. The Speaker's office is finalising the verdict," the report said.

"The operative part of the verdict is likely to be announced on that day, while the detailed order will be given to both groups later," it added.

The internal discord within the Shiv Sena came to light in June 2022 when Shinde and a group of MLAs challenged the leadership of then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. This internal rift led to the dissolution of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, which also encompassed the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress.

Representatives from both sides have indicated their readiness to challenge an adverse ruling by the Speaker in the Supreme Court if necessary.

Following the discord in June 2022, Shinde secured the Chief Ministerial position with the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Additionally, in July of the same year, the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party pledged its support to Shinde's administration.

Furthermore, the Election Commission designated the 'Shiv Sena' name and its 'bow and arrow' symbol to the faction led by Shinde. In contrast, the faction under Thackeray's leadership was recognised as Shiv Sena (UBT), symbolised by a flaming torch.
