7 Workers Killed As Service Lift Collapses From 40th Floor In Building In Maha's Thane
The workers, employed for waterproofing work on the upper floors and the terrace of the high-rise in Maharashtra's Thane were descending in the service lift when the lift's rope snapped.
Seven workers died after a lift collapsed in Maharashtra's Thane on Sunday, as per the Thane Municipal Corporation. One worker who was pulled out alive was critically injured when the service lift malfunctioned and crashed within the Runwal Irene building located in the Balkumb area, near Ghodbunder, news agency IANS reported. The six victims who lost their lives in the incident have been identified as Mahendra Chaupal, aged 32; Rupeshkumar Das, aged 21; Haroon Sheikh, aged 47; Mithilesh, aged 35; Kalidas, aged 38. Sunil Kumar, 21, who was rescued also succumbed to his injuries, as per a PTI report.
A visual shared by ANI showed rescue workers from Thane Fire Brigade and Disaster Management at the spot where the incident took place.
Yasin Tadvi, who heads the disaster management cell of Thane Municipal Corporation, told news agency PTI that a construction lift and not the regular elevator came crashing down from the 40th storey and landed at P3 (three levels underground in the parking area).

IANS cited officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation and Disaster Management Centre as stating that the tragic event occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m today. The workers, employed for waterproofing work on the upper floors and the terrace of the high-rise, were descending in the service lift. Midway during their descent, a sudden technical glitch occurred, causing the lift's rope to snap. After this, the lift plummeted at high speed, resulting in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of six workers instantly. One additional worker was critically injured in the incident, as per IANS' report.

In response to the emergency, teams from the Thane Fire Brigade and Disaster Management were swiftly dispatched to the scene, initiating rescue and relief operations.
A case has been registered against the contractor under Indian Penal Code sections 304(2) (rash and negligent act), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), senior police inspector Uttam Sonawane from Kapurbawdi police station told PTI.
