Kerala Rain: IMD Issues Yellow Alert In 3 Districts As Downpour Continues

Stay updated on the latest news from Kerala as heavy rains persist, prompting a yellow alert from the IMD in three districts. Read on to get details regarding precautions advised by authorities.

Heavy rainfall continued to batter various regions of Kerala, causing disruptions to daily life on Monday (October 2). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert in three districts, namely Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam. The yellow alert signifies an expectation of substantial rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm. According to the meteorological agency's forecasts, these persistent rains are anticipated to continue until October 5.

Over the past three to four days, the state has experienced widespread rainfall, leading to multiple incidents of uprooted trees, waterlogged areas, and collapsing compound walls in several localities. However, there have been no major casualties reported across the state thus far.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) revealed that, within the last 24 hours, the districts most significantly impacted by the deluge included Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode. In response, KSDMA activated two relief camps in both Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, according to a report by PTI.

In the past day, a total of 26 individuals have been affected by various rain-related incidents, as reported by the SDMA, as per the report. The downpour previously submerged vast expanses of paddy fields in Edathua, a small settlement situated in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district.

With the continuous rainfall posing a threat, the Disaster Management Authority has issued a cautionary advisory to residents living in high-altitude areas, urging them to maintain heightened vigilance during these incessant rains, the report said.

IMD Issues 'Red' Alert For Goa:

The IMD issued a 'red' alert for Goa, forecasting heavy rains over the next 24 hours in the coastal state.

The IMD issued a nowcast weather warning, predicting "moderate to heavy spells of rain accompanied by winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour gusting to 60 kilometres per hour." According to the IMD, clouds were present in the state's Pernem, Tiswadi, Bardez, Bicholim, and Sattari talukas in the morning.

"More clouds are gathering over the Arabian Sea. More talukas are likely to be affected as clouds move in a north-eastern direction, according to the IMD.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has activated control rooms in the districts of North and South Goa.

"Extremely heavy rains are expected in Goa over the next 24 hours. The public is advised not to enter waterlogged or flood-prone areas," the SDMA stated. Because of the high water levels and rough weather conditions, Drishti Marine, the state government-appointed lifesaving agency, advised people not to go into the sea, PTI reported.
