Delhi Protest: Has Jagan Mohan Reddy Walked Into A Self-Laid Trap? He Has To Choose Between BJP And INDIA Now

YS Jaganmohan Reddy's Delhi protest garnered support from the INDIA bloc, but not Congress. Despite past BJP support, Reddy's strategic alignment with INDIA suggests a shift.

Andhra Politics: The protest led by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy in New Delhi has sparked a significant political debate. There has been unified support from leaders of the INDIA bloc, though that starkly contrasts with the notable absence of Congress representatives. This absence — possibly due to concerns regarding YS Sharmila, Jagan's sparring sister who leads the Congress in Andhra Pradesh, or other internal dynamics — raises questions about the evolving political landscape, but the fact that INDIA leaders like Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav showed up at the protest indicates a strategic move.

Will Jaganmohan Reddy align with the INDIA bloc now? With the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), an NDA ally, ruling in Andhra and going all out against the former CM and his governance, it is unlikely that he will be supporting the BJP any more.

A Strategic Alignment And A Dilemma

The presence of INDIA leaders at Reddy's protest underscores a calculated move. It suggests that Jagan Mohan Reddy may have no viable path forward except aligning with the alliance. His longstanding support for the BJP, which began in 2014 despite the TDP being part of the NDA coalition at that time, has complicated his political standing.

This support had indirectly contributed to the rift between the BJP and the TDP, ultimately resulting in Chandrababu Naidu leaving the NDA.

Jagan Reddy's withdrawal of traditional support to the BJP now also highlights a strategic necessity. Rejecting the alliance, which is supporting him in his difficult times, in favour of the BJP would likely foster suspicion within the BJP and anger in the Congress-led alliance.

This delicate balance probably necessitated his invitation to INDIA leaders to back his protest, reflecting a well-considered decision.

The Path Forward With INDIA And Political Consequences

Leaders from various parties within INDIA have extended their support, inviting Jagan to join the coalition. Despite no clear response from Jagan, his historical support for the BJP appears untenable moving forward. His political journey, marked by indirect support for the BJP since 2014, must adapt to the current political climate.

Should Jagan chooses to support the BJP in any matter, it could lead to a political fallout. His previous declaration of conditional support for the central government must now shift towards the opposition alliance. A failure to do so could jeopardise his support from INDIA.

Jagan's decision to seek national support for his Delhi protest against the TDP-Jana Sena government in Andhra Pradesh puts him in a precarious position.

YSRCP leaders believe Jagan has trapped himself by seeking the support of national parties for his protest in Delhi.

The NDA government is in power in Andhra Pradesh, and inviting INDIA leaders to protest against it means the BJP will not support him anymore. Moreover, there was arguably no need to involve national leaders against the Chandrababu Naidu government, as it was a battle that could have been fought at the state level.

However, since Jagan went ahead with the Delhi protest, it's time for him to take a firm stand on which side he will sway politically. It has been only two months since the state went to elections and brought in a new government. The next elecions are four and a half years away. The YSRCP chief can't step back now, and will likely have to continue opposing the BJP. It's like he has entered a battle zone.

Time will tell of it was a strategic move or prove to be a political quagmire.
