Tokyo 2020: Roger Federer Pulls Out Of Tokyo Olympics Due To Knee Injury
As it appears, Federer might have missed the last chance of playing the Olympic games. It was a stellar international career for the Swiss maestro.
Tokyo2020: Roger Federer has decided to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The 39-year old Swiss international was recently defeated in the quarter-final of the Wimbledon 2021. The Beijing Olympics gold-medalist has taken this decision following a knee injury that he acquired during the English grand-slam.
Federer announced his decision in a statement on social media.
The statement read:
"During the grass court season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee, and have accepted that I must withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic Games. "I am greatly disappointed, as it has been an honor and highlight of my career each time I have represented Switzerland. I have already begun rehabilitation in the hopes of returning to the tour later this summer. I wish the entire Swiss team the best of luck and I will be rooting hard from afar"
Federer has won two medals at the Olympics. The first came at the Beijing Olympics 2008, where he won the men's doubles gold alongside Stan Wavrinka for Switzerland.
The second medal for Federer came at the 2012 London Olympics where he won the silver medal after losing the final against Andy Murray of England.
As it appears, Federer might have missed the last chance of playing the Olympic games. It was a stellar international career for the Swiss maestro. His humility is reflected from the above image where he is seen smiling graciously even as he accepts the silver after a Final loss.
Apart from Federer, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem have opted out of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
