FULL SCORECARD
NEW ZEALAND (2nd innings) | Target 475 SESSION 3... India opted not to enforce the follow on and pressed home the advantage further by setting a mammoth target of 475. Pujara was the star as he scored an unbeaten century. It was always going to be a herculean task for New Zealand to save the match from there and they fell like a pack of cards in the final innings to the guile of Indian bowlers. Ashwin deserves a special mention as he took 13 wickets in the match and 27 in the series. The visiting side came back to bat and the resilient opening pair stitched together a solid 118 run partnership. Once it was broken, the floodgates opened and Ashwin produced a thrilling display of spin bowling grabbing a 6-fer and Jadeja bagged two wickets. The Kiwis conceded a big lead of 258 runs to the home side. Earlier in the match, India posted a huge score of 557 on the board riding on the skipper's masterclass double ton and Rahane's exceptional 188. The Kiwis tried hard but had no answer to the brilliance of the duo as they were instrumental in pushing the visiting side on back foot. India have marched to victory and it has been a thoroughly superlative performance. With that, they whitewash the Black Caps and clinch the series 3-0 and also grab the No. 1 TEST RANKING OFFICIALLY. Ashwin once again came to haunt the Kiwi batsmen in their final innings and they had no answer to his magical spell of bowling as he grabbed 7 wickets and ran through their order in a jiffy. Jadeja chipped in with a couple of wickets and Shami with one. 44.5 overs: WICKET! THAT IS IT! ASHWIN FINISHES IT OFF! Landed outside off, Boult comes down the track to play this one but only manages to play it back to Ashwin who accepts the catch and throws the ball in the air in celebration. What a match he has had and fittingly he takes the final wicket. The Indian dressing room explodes. INDIA WIN BY 321 RUNS AND WIN THE SERIES 3-0. Trent Boult c & b Ashwin 4 (27b 1x4 0x6). 44 overs: New Zealand 153/9, trail India by 321 runs. 43 overs: New Zealand 149/9, trail India by 325 runs. 42 overs: New Zealand 144/9, trail India by 330 runs. 40 overs: New Zealand 143/9, trail India by 331 runs. Fullish outside off, Henry tries to clear mid off but fails to do so. The ball goes straight towards Shami who takes an easy catch. That's 6th wicket for Ashwin once again in this Test. India just need one more wicket to whitewash New Zealand. Matt Henry c Mohammed Shami b Ashwin 0 (3b 0x4 0x6). 34.1 overs: WICKET! Yet another 5-fer for Ravichandran Ashwin! Flighted outside off, Patel stands in his crease and tries to sweep but misses it completely. The ball goes through and hits the off stump. 21st 5-wicket haul for Ravichandran Ashwin! Jeetan Patel b Ashwin 0 (2b 0x4 0x6). 32.5 overs: WICKET! Santner departs! Tossed up around off, Santner tries to defend but misses. The ball goes off an inside edge and then brushes off pads and goes to hit the stumps. Ashwin gets his fourth wicket, 10th of the match. What a game he's having once again. Can New Zealand bat till stumps? Three wickets needed for India! Mitchell Santner b Ashwin 14 (24b 2x4 1x6). 25.3 overs: WICKET! Guptill departs and the Kiwis are further slipping into a hole! Arm ball from Jadeja. Lands it on a length on off, coming in with the angle and skidding on. Guptill plays for the spin and is beaten to get rapped on the pads. It looks quite adjacent to the naked eye and the umpire responds to the loud appeal by ruling it out. It looks like the match will get over today itself. Fantastic display from the Indian bowlers and they are reaping the rewards. Martin Guptill lbw b Jadeja 29 (60b 5x4 0x6). 25 overs: New Zealand 111/5. Martin Guptill 29 (58b 5x4 0x6), Bradley Watling 0 (2b 0x4 0x6). 23.4 overs: WICKETS! Another one bites the dust! That's a terrific catch! Tossed up on middle and leg, Neesham tries to play it across and the ball goes straight into the hands of Kohli at short mid-wicket. James Neesham c Kohli b Jadeja 0 (4b 0x4 0x6). 22.4 overs: WICKET! Ronchi departs and the floodgates are about to open! Tossed up on a length outside off, Ronchi plays for the trajectory instead of playing for the length. The ball stays low, spins in sharply and he is beaten on the back foot defence as the ball whizzes past his bat and crashes into the stumps! Ashwin is spinning his web around the Kiwi batsmen again. New Zealand are in trouble. Luke Ronchi b Ashwin 15 (18b 1x4 0x6). 18.3 overs: WICKET! Bowled 'em! What a ball! Nicely flighted delivery outside off, Taylor gets down on his knee and tries to sweep but misses it completely. The ball turns in sharply after landing and rattles the timber. Taylor looked clueless out there. Ashwin gives him a send off. Superb bowling, this! New Zealand are three down already. Ross Taylor b Ashwin 32 (25b 5x4 1x6). 10.6 overs: WICKET! It is that man Ashwin who strikes! The mainstay of Kiwis, Williamson departs and they are in trouble! Tossed up on a length on off, spinning sharply. Williamson goes across his stumps and looks to nudge it towards square leg but misses the line of the delivery and is rapped low on the pads. There is a loud, loud appeal for LBW and the umpire rules it out. It looked really close to the naked eye and the replays show that it was quite plumb. Kane Williamson lbw b Ashwin 27 (33b 5x4 0x6). SESSION 2... The pitch is still playing well and the Kiwi batsmen need to apply themselves otherwise India will run away with the show and sail towards victory. Join us for the final session of the day which promises to be an exciting one. Latham was beaten by sheer pace as Yadav rapped him LBW in front of wicket. Both Shami and Yadav have bowled with good pace and have maintained disciplined lines and lengths. A herculean task lies ahead of Guptill and Williamson as they would need to counter the threatening duo of Ashwin and Jadeja. India have stamped their authority in the post-lunch session and are complete favourites. To begin with, Pujara batted brilliantly to score a well-deserved century and Rahane supported him well in the hunt for quick runs. They set a mammoth target of 475 for the Kiwis and the visiting side faltered while they came out to bat in their final innings. TEA: New Zealand 38/1 in 9 overs. 7.3 overs: Umesh Yadav to Martin Guptill, OUCH! That must have hurt! Short ball on off, Guptill tries to duck but doesn't judge the bounce. The ball hits him on the gloves. The physio comes out to attend Guptill. He looks in pain there. Gets an ice pack treatment. 7 overs: New Zealand 22/1. Kane Williamson 13 (21b 2x4 0x6), Martin Guptill 2 (11b 0x4 0x6). 1.4 overs: WICKET! Umesh Yadav draws first blood! Length ball landed just outside off, angles in after landing, Latham looks to play it straight but misses it completely by sheer pace. He is hit on the pads, in front of the stumps and there is a big appeal for a leg before. The umpire has no hesitation in raising his finger and India get the early breakthrough! Superb start by Umesh. Tom Latham lbw b Yadav 6 (10b 0x4 1x6). INDIA (2nd innings) For New Zealand, Jeetan Patel got those two wickets and apart from him no one really threatened. In fact, you can say the Indian batsmen were out mostly in pursuit of quick runs. Let's see how the visitors fight back from here. Stay tuned for the fourth innings. INDIA HAVE DECLARED ON 216/3. So that was expected, India were just waiting for Pujara's ton and Kohli has declared after it, giving New Zealand a TARGET OF 475. The hosts scored quick runs and have given New Zealand almost four and a half sessions to bat now. Gambhir scored a quick fifty whereas Pujara got his century. Rahane was fluent as well in his short innings. 48.5 overs: 8th Test Century up for Pujara. The dressing room applauds and his wife gives a standing ovation as well. 45 overs: India 185/3. Cheteshwar Pujara 83 (134b 7x4 0x6), Ajinkya Rahane 10 (10b 1x4 0x6). 39.6 overs: WICKET! The skipper departs! Tossed up outside off, spinning in. Kohli kneels and goes for the sweep but misses the line of the ball and is rapped low on the pads. There is a big shout for an LBW and the umpire adjudges it out. It looked close to the naked eye. The replays show that the impact may be outside off. Virat Kohli lbw b Patel 17 (28b 1x4 0x6). 37 overs: India 143/2. India's lead crosses 400. Virat Kohli 11 (19b 1x4 0x6), Cheteshwar Pujara 57 (105b 4x4 0x6). The Kiwi fielders were terrific in the field and they deserve a special mention. The bowlers also tried hard but failed to cause any real jitters. Pujara and Kohli would look to come out and score quick runs in the second session. A declaration might just be around the corner after they bat for an hour or so. Join us for the post lunch session. He would be disappointed that he got out just after that but he was looking to score quickly for the home side. Pujara has carried on his good form and has scored a sensible half century as well. India have pressed the advantage further as the lead has swelled to 385. They scored 109 runs in 28 overs for the loss of two wickets. The Black Caps struck early today as Guptill sent Vijay back to the hut with a brilliant piece of fielding. Gambhir came back to bat and continued his innings after he injured his shoulder yesterday. He looked calm and composed in the middle and batted with grit and aggression to score a half century. SESSION 1... LUNCH: India 127 for 2, lead New Zealand by 385 runs. 33.3 overs: 11th Test fifty for Pujara. He raises his bat and acknowledges the crowd and his wife. He took 96 balls. 29.6 overs: WICKET! Straight to the fielder! Fine knock though by Gambhir! Tossed up outside off, Gautam comes down the track and tries to go inside out. He fails to keep it down as the ball goes straight to Guptill at covers. Gambhir walks back but that was a very good knock. Played for the team. India have lost their second wicket. Gautam Gambhir c Guptill b Patel 50 (56b 6x4 0x6). 28.6 overs: 22nd Test fifty for Gautam Gambhir. The crowd erupts. What a knock this has been. Gautam Gambhir 50 (54b 6x4 0x6). 25 overs: India 92/1. Cheteshwar Pujara 29 (69b 2x4 0x6), Gautam Gambhir 42 (39b 6x4 0x6). 20 overs: India 58/1. Cheteshwar Pujara 19 (52b 1x4 0x6), Gautam Gambhir 19 (26b 2x4 0x6), Mitchell Santner 8-1-20-0, Trent Boult 4-0-12-0. 13.4 overs: WICKET! Brilliant piece of work from Guptill! Tossed up, Vijay pushes it towards covers and sets off for a single. He has probably misjudged it as Pujara is not interested and sends his back. Guptill from short cover comes running in and dives to his left and makes a back handed flick to the keeper on the go. Watling flicks the bails in a jiffy. Vijay seems to be just short. The run out appeal has been referred upstairs. The Kiwis are looking confident out there. The replays show that Vijay is just short of his crease and Vijay has to depart. That was loose from him and he has to play for it. Murali Vijay run out 19 (42b 2x4 0x6). 10 overs: India 26/0. Cheteshwar Pujara 5 (22), Murali Vijay 15 (31). Hello and a warm welcome on Day 4 of the final Test match between India and New Zealand. The home side are truly in the driver's seat as they lead by 276 runs. They would look to score big and draw curtains on the Kiwis on a pitch that is offering a good amount of turn and bounce to the spinners. If the visiting side are to entertain any thoughts of a draw or a victory, they have to play out of their skins.RECAP Riding on star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's 20th haul of five wickets or more, India put themselves in a commanding position reaching 18/0 to take an overall lead of 276 runs over New Zealand at stumps on day three of the third and final Test at the Holkar stadium here on Monday. Ashwin led the Indian charge with six wickets and two brilliant run-outs along with left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/80) to bundle out the visitors for a paltry 299 just after the tea break in response to India's first innings total of 557/5 declared. Despite taking a huge lead and in a position to enforce the follow on, India skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat for a second time. Opener Murali Vijay (11) and one down Cheteshwar Pujara (1) were at the crease when the umpires decided to unsettle the bails. Pujara had to rush to the middle after veteran opener Gautam Gambhir (6) was forced to return to the pavilion with a shoulder injury. Playing in his 39th Test, Ashwin ran through the Kiwi top order comprising Tom Latham (52), Kane Williamson (8), Ross Taylor (0), Luke Ronchi (0) and James Neesham (71) besides running out top scorer Martin Guptil (72) and Jeetan Patel (18). He later dismissed tailender Trent Boult (0) to finish things off in style. Jadeja complimented his senior partner well by packing back stumper B.J. Watling (23) and Mitchell Santner (22). Already on the backfoot after losing the series 0-2, the Kiwis got off to a good start with openers Guptill and Latham, who put on 118 runs but ran out of steam once Kohli introduced spin from both ends. Apart from the opening partnership, Neesham was involved in two vital stands -- 53 for the sixth wicket with Watling and 52 for the seventh wicket with Santner but that was not enough to take the visitors anywhere near the Indian total. Earlier, resuming the day at 28 for no loss, the visitors had just lost the wicket of Latham when Ashwin trapped him plumb in front in the morning session as they went for lunch at 125/1. The Indians wrested the upper hand early on in the post-lunch session when New Zealand lost three wickets in four overs. The Chennai tweaker picked up his second wicket when Williamson dragged the ball onto his stumps while attempting a cut. The off-spinner then sent Taylor back to the pavilion in his very next over before a straight drive by Ronchi deflected off his hand to hit the stumps at the non-striker's end and catch Guptill out of his crease. Ashwin then picked up his fourth wicket when Ajinkya Rahane showed some excellent fielding at first slip to send back Ronchi. Watling and Neesham then tried to bring the Kiwi innings back on track. But Jadeja found Watling's outside edge with a delivery that turned away sharply after pitching to put the visitors into further trouble just before the tea break. After the tea break, it was a one way traffic for India as both the spinners lost little time in taking the remaining four wickets before Kohli opted against enforcing the follow-on. Eyeing a 3-0 whitewash, India will now aim to consolidate their lead and give a stiff target when they come out to bat on Tuesday.
