U-19 World Cup-Winning India Captain Recovers From Surgery For 'Hole In Heart' Ahead Of IPL 2025, Proves Match Fitness

Yash Dhull, the 2022 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain for India, underwent a heart surgery prior to Delhi Premier League and eyes a strong comeback after recovery.

Yash Dhull, the 2022 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain for India, recently underwent a heart surgery before joining the ongoing Delhi Premier League (DPL) for his team, Central Delhi Kings (CDK). A hole in his heart was discovered by the doctors during a routine check-up at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The 21-year-old was then advised for surgery.

The Delhi-born started the 2024 DPL season as the captain of CDK but gave up the reins halfway through the tournament to teammate Jonty Sidhu.

Notably, Dhull’s performances with the bat have been inconsistent in the recent past. In the DPL, he has only scored 93 runs at a dismal strike rate of 112.41. After the captaincy relinquishment, Dhull tried chipping in as an impact player for the team but failed to make heavy contributions then as well.

It's Taking Time But I Will Give My 100%: Yash Dhull On Heart Surgery Recovery

After another subpar outing for CDK in the Delhi Premier League on August 27 (Tuesday), Dhull stated that he is returning from a surgery and is playing on the back of a recovery.

“Certain things have happened in the past, and I have returned after a recovery. It’s taking time but I am positive and will give 100% for my game (Kuch cheeze hui hai past mai… mai recover karke aaya hu. Thoda time lag raha hai but mai positive hu aur apne game ke liye 100% duga),” Dhull mentioned to News18 after CDK’s match against East Delhi Riders on Tuesday.

Yash Dhull's childhood coach Pradeep Kochar also spoke about Dhull’s surgery and return to cricket in DPL.

"During the NCA check-up, the team, after consulting with the set of doctors, advised him to undergo surgery for the hole in his heart. He was attending a camp with the rest of the emerging players a couple of months back in Bengaluru," Kochar said.

Yash Dhull made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in the 2023 season for Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians.

Kochar confirmed that Dhull received a fitness certificate from the NCA following his surgery and should have no issues playing in any format. Kochar also mentioned that Dhull only rested during one DPL game due to high humidity and is expected to be fit for the Ranji Trophy and longer formats going forward.

“The NCA has given him the certificate of fitness, so there shouldn’t be an issue in any of the formats going forward. During the DPL, he took a rest from one of the games because the humidity was very high. Even going forward, there shouldn’t be any problem for him to play the Ranji Trophy and the longer formats," mentioned Kochar.
