After Kohli Contradicts Ganguly On Captaincy Row, Gavaskar Wants BCCI President To Clear Air
Kohli vs Ganguly: Gavaskar said, "What is the controversy here. As long as the chairman of selectors had told him clearly that we are not considering you for ODI captaincy now, that's perfectly fine."
Virat Kohli vs Sourav Ganguly: Legendary Indian batsman, Sunil Gavaskar said that BCCI President Sourav Ganguly "surely should be asked" about how the difference in perception arose between him and Virat Kohli. Gavaskar wants Ganguly to clear the air on the same.
"Yes, he (Ganguly) is the BCCI president and surely he should be asked why there is this discrepancy," Gavaskar told India Today.
What is the controversy?
Just days after Virat Kohli stepped down from India's T20I captaincy, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had made a statement saying that he had requested Virat Kohli not to step down from T20I captain as the BCCI did not plan on having two white-ball captains. Virat Kohli refuted this statement by saying, "there was no prior communication with me since I announced the T20I captaincy decision up till December 8," during a press conference in Mumbai.
What did Gavaskar say?
"I think it (Kohli's comment) actually doesn't bring the BCCI into the picture. I think it's the individual who has to be asked where he got the impression he had conveyed such a message to Kohli. So, that's the only thing," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.
In his press conference, Kohli said that he was contacted one and half hours before the selection meeting, to which Gavaskar said, "What is the controversy here. As long as the chairman of selectors had told him clearly that we are not considering you for ODI captaincy now, that's perfectly fine. It is the selectors who have complete authority is selection committee meetings. The captain is just a co-opted non-voting member."
"Yes, it always helps to have a clear line of communication so that there is no speculation. So from now, from what has happened, there should be a clear line of communication and the chairman of the selection committee can come down and say why he has been picked and why he has not been picked," the former captain added.
