New Delhi: Even as the Indian team continued to pile on records in Sri Lanka, a 12-year-old U-17 Indian cricketer drowned to death in a swimming pool in the island nation.

Monath Sona Narendra, a resident of Gujarat, was part of the 19-member team who has gone to the Island nation to play an under-17 tournament.

The tragic incident took place on Tuesday evening when the Gujarat boy decided to have a swim in the swimming pool at their resort in Pamunugama on the west coast of Sri Lanka with four other members of the Indian team.

Narendra was immediately rushed to Pamunugama hospital where he breathed his last, police said. His body was later moved to the Ragama hospital for a post-mortem.

According to reports, the boy and two others had gone to the pool against the orders of the team management. Their game had been affected by rain and the boys were asked to stay in their hotel rooms.

Meanwhile the senior Indian cricket team have completed a 9-0 clean sweep to register their first ever whitewash against a side across all formats.

The Kohli-led side walked to an easy 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the one-off T20I on Wednesday.
