Gill, who came to the crease after the fall of Indian captain Rohit Sharma's wicket, looked good right from the word go as he kept busy at the crease while also hitting occiasional boundaries. Gill got to his seventh Test fifty off just 66 balls after he was dropped by Mark Chapman off Glenn Phillips bowling. Gill formed a crucial 96-run partnership with Rishabh Pant to get India closer to New Zealand's.
After Pant's wicket, Gill played cautious cricket as he New Zealand spinners bowled on probing lines. As Gill looked set for a ton, Ajaz Patel got Gill to edge one to slip as he got out on 90, missing a century by 10 runs.

- 90 (146) with 7 fours and 1 six, missed out on a very well deserved century. He rescued India when they were in trouble, well done Gill. 🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/3zI0ts7skF
India were eventually bowled out for 263 as they secured a slender lead of 28 runs on a pitch that has so far been offering much assistance to the spinners. Notably, this was the first time India managed to get a lead over New Zealand in the entire series.
For the unversed, India lost the first two Tests to New Zealand and lost their first home Test series since 2012.
