LIVE: Umesh leads India fightback before bad light suspends play in Kolkata

Good finish to the day for India who have been having a difficult time in this Test match. They struggled with the bat for a major part of the innings and till the second session today, seemed to be on the back foot with the ball. Umesh Yadav was the one who brought his team back into the game, with wickets of Thirimanne and Mathews. However, on the flip side, 52 runs were scored in this session in just 14.4 overs.

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test, Kolkata, live scorecard

That's it for the day

Good finish to the day for India who have been having a difficult time in this Test match. They struggled with the bat for a major part of the innings and till the second session today, seemed to be on the back foot with the ball. Umesh Yadav was the one who brought his team back into the game, with wickets of Thirimanne and Mathews. However, on the flip side, 52 runs were scored in this session in just 14.4 overs.

Bad light interrupts, again

Going off for the moment. The umpires get together, have a chat but the two batsmen are almost on the road to the pavillion. They do wait for the official signal while a pensive Kohli and his team are stationary. Now they walk off as well without complaining. No rocket science, the bowling team will want to bowl at this stage while the batting side will not want to face.

Shami is going off

Hamstring? Cramps? Not sure. Don't think India will be hurt too much as of now. But if it is a serious issue, this could be a big blow. Meanwhile, the captain comes on to bowl the pending delivery.

After Thirimanne, Mathews to walk back

OUT! Poor, very poor from Mathews. He is dejected with himself as he walks back to the pavilion. Yadav with yet another wicket and both the settled batsmen for Sri Lanka are back in the pavilion, just what we were saying during the tea break. It wasn't exactly a great delivery, on a length and outside off, Mathews drives it uppishly and straight into the hands of KL Rahul at covers. He makes no mistake and India are turning it on. The replays show that Mathews' feet was nowhere near the pitch of the delivery and his weight was on the back foot. As a result, he ended up reaching out for it. Could have left it easily. Mathews will be kicking himself. He was the set batsman and should have seen his side through the day.

Umesh strikes!

OUT! Fantastic catch by Virat Kohli! Yadav speeds in from around the wicket and hurls across a back of a length delivery around off. It straightens a hint as it reaches the batsman who tries to push inside the line. Gets a thick outside edge towards second slip where Kohli stretches down low to his left and snaps an excellent catch. He bangs the ball on the turf to let out his frustration as Yadav roars in delight. End of a fine knock and a partnership worth 99 runs. Sri Lanka trail by 39 runs.

That's Tea on Day 3

Sri Lanka go to Tea at 113/2 with a well settled Thirimanne (48)  and Matthews (31) in the crease. The Indian bowlers have been far from impressive, with only Bhuvneshwar Kumar adjusting to the conditons well. He has picked up two wickets. The pitch has also eased out compared to first couple of days

Thirimanne gets a life

Umesh Yadav finally gets one to move away from length and the result almost followed but only if Dhawan at first slip had grabbed on to the catch. It was a regulation catch, he will be most disappointed when he sees this on the big screen. But more importantly, Thirimanne is still there on 27 and the partnership is going strong. SL: 72/2

50 up for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have weathered the early storm of Indian bowlers. Just a couple of wickets lost and they have put on fifty. India had already lost half-their side by the time they reached fifty runs.

GOOD NEWS: Mohammed Shami is back on to the field.

NOTE: Mohammed Shami has just walked off the field after completing his fourth over. He did look in some discomfort for the last 10 minutes or so, was seen splashing water on his face in the fine-leg boundary. May be a case of humidity? Still no clarity, let's hope there's nothing serious cause India will need his services if they have to make a comeback in this match.

Sadeera's breezy innings comes to an end

The youngster plays away from the body and that was enough for Bhuvneshwar to find the outside edge. His 22 ball 23 run cameo comes to end. Bhuvneshwar is swinging India back into the match. SL: 34/2

Bhuvi draws first blood

The around the wicket tactic has worked for India. Bhuvneshwar takes Shami's revenge, traps Karunaratne right in front with in in dipper, the review doesn't save him this time as no short was offered. India have their first. SL: 29/1

Impressive Sadeera Samarawickrama

Whatever the young right hander shown so far has been perfect. He has got a big stride forward, covered for the swing while driving and has also flicked Bhuvneshwar off legnth. He is batting on 20 off 16 on a pitch where players like Kohli and Rahane found dificult cope with

DRS saves Karunaratne

Shami gets it to go with the angle that traps Karunaratne right in front. The umpire puts his finger up and Karunaratne signals for review immediately. Did he get an inside edge? No he didn't but the ball would have go over the stumps as the ball tracker suggests. Another review that goes in the visitors' favour. Shami and India will have to wait for their first wicket. SL: 24/0

8 form the 1st over

A positive start by young Sadeera with a boundary off the first ball to get off the mark and a firm push to covers for 3 runs from the next. Bhuvneshwar overpitched on both occasions. The bright sun shine has helped the pitch ease out a little. But still a lot on offer for the seam bowlers. 8 off Bhuvneshwar's first.

The Sri Lankan openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama have made their way out with a job on their hands. Their first task will be to keep Indian new ball bowlers away from the wickets column - easier said than done, considering the nature of the pitch and the ability of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami.

India 1st innings round-up

Suranga Lakmal was the star for Sri Lanka claiming 4 wickets for 26 runs, exploting the favourable conditons to good effect. He pushed India on to the backfoot in the first day itself by picking up three wickets without coneeding a run in his six overs in the 11.5 overs of play.

Nothing dramatic happened on Day 2 with Dasun Shanaka getting two important wickets. Pujara stood tall displaying commendable technique to hold the Indian innings together.

He was removed early on Day 3 by Lahiru Gamage for 52 which left the stage open for Saha (29) and Jadeja (22) to express themselves. But a double wicket over from Dilruwan Perera brought Sri Lanka back in the game. A late slog Shami (24) took India's total to 172.

The umpires have decided to take lunch on Day 3 with Sri Lanka bowling India out for 172

India all out

One shot too many for Shami. This time he finds the deep mid-wicket fielder, Gamage gets his second wicket but not after Shami had added 24 valuable runs. India are all out for 172.

Lakmal gets Bhuvi

Edged and gone! Lakmal has put an end to the fake fielding debate by getting the outside edge of Bhuvneshwar's bat (13). He gets one step closer to a well deserved five-for. IND: 146/9

Chandimal's slide has sparked off a commentary box debate

Simon Doull: "Well all I can say Sunny is sometimes even the smartest of people make the stupidest of mistakes. But when the rule is there, that should have been five runs to India."

Sunil Gavaskar: "There are some real knowledgeable people who have given a green signal to this rule. Men who have been in the thick of things believe 5 penalty runs must be awarded to the batting side when a fielder tries to destract the batsman by pretending to throw the ball from the boundary when he is not even close to collect it."

Sanjay Manjrekar: "There have been rules that we haven't agreed with. But this (fake fielding) has to be at the top of that list for sure."

Fake fielding?

Dinesh Chandimal chases the ball, puts the slide in, gets up for throw but hey! where is the ball? The ball is still rolling down to the cover boundary as the deep fielder collects it. Shami and Bhuvi run 2. But accoridng to the new rules of cricket roled out from Ocotber this year, that classisfies as 'fake fielding', resulting in the batting side being awarded five penalty runs. But Chandimal gets away with just a word from the umpires.

Double blow

Saha goes for the paddle and the ball lobs up to the slip fielder, umpire's got his finger up but wait Saha has gone for the review. Oh no! There is a spike in the snickometer and the decision stays. Perera has given a double blow to India, first Jadeja, then Saha (29). India eight down for 128

Jadeja is out!

Yes that was pad first! and was hitting leg and middle. A fantastic review by Sri Lanka. Jadeja plays down the wrong line to a Perrera slider and India have lost their seventh. The threatening partnership comes to end. IND: 127/7

Missed stumping

A real lapse of concentration from Sri Lanka wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella. It was a regulation take but he fails to collect the ball cleanly and Saha gets a life on 25. That might prove to be costly as the Test match progresses. Dilwuran Perrera doesn't look that impressed and he has reason for it.

First six!

It was just a matter of time before Jadeja took the off-spinner on. Flighted delivery around off stump, Jadeja goes for it with full force to deposit it over long on for the first six of the match. That gives the small Eden crowd something to cheer for. IND: 121/6

Jadeja arrives

Meanwhile, Jadeja is scoring at a strike rate of 100 when most others struggled to even get to doubkle figures. He is 12 off 12 with 2 fours. That shouldn't surprise many, that's the way he plays. But it's an alarming sign for Sri Lanka. A Jadeja cameo here can easily make a difference of 30-40 runs in this Test match.

100 up for India

Misfield! That gifts India a boudary, priceless in this scenario and India have gone past three figures with six wickets down. So the first milestone has been achieved, now the job for Saha and Jadeja will be to ensure India doesn't lose another wicket in the next hour. IND: 102/6

Russell Arnold: Slightly against the run of play but a huge wicket for Sri Lanka. Gamage has got the one who had scored 65-70% of India's total runs so far.

The most prized scalp

Where did that come from? Gamage finds the gap between Pujara's bat and pad to knock the off stump down and goes on a loud scream to suggest that he is on top, Sri Lanka is on top. Virat Kohli's expression says it all, it's a body blow to India, they have now lost their sixth wicket and that too of Pujara for 52. IND: 79/6

Pujara gets to 50 - best among his 16

First sight of spin in three days of this Test match and perhaps the thing Pujara was waiting for. He paddles it fine to make full use of Herath's error in line, the ball reaches the boundary and Pujara has his 16th Test fity, dare we say, the best of his career.

9.14 AM IST: And as we speak, players have made their way into the centre, Lahiru Gamage has the ball in his hand, he has to bowl one ball to complete the 33rd over.

Now we know what is the secret behind Pujara's patience

Indians regroup, perhaps the discussion is all about how to get to a respactable score on this green track.

8.50 AM IST: BRIGHT SUNSIHINE! somethig that we all have been dreaming of for the last 3 days. No covers and if things go well, we are all set to have a full day's play - for the first time in the Test match.

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test, Day 3 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata

LIVE UPDATES DAY 3

The Day 2 script pretty much mirrored the opening day when bad light, rain stoppages and lots of swing ruled the day to torment the batsmen. Resuming at 17 for 3, India lost Ajinkya Rahane (4) and Ravichandran Ashiwn (4) to Dasun Shanaka, who troubled with his medium pace that suited the conditons.

Only 21 overs of play was possible before rain washed both the post-lunch and post-tea sessions. India had crawled their way to 74 for 5, mainly becuase of some masterclass from Chesteshwar Pujara, who showed exactly how to bat on such seaming condtions.
