MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings defeated Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans to win their record-equalling fifth Indian Premier League trophy, making Dhoni join-most successful captain in the history of world's richest T20 tournament. It was highly anticipated that 42-year-Dhoni would announce retirement from IPL after this season. However, the legendary wicketkeeper hinted that if his body allows, he might return to play IPL 2024.
"Circumstantially, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love I have received all over, the easy thing would be to walk away from here, but the harder thing would be to work hard for nine months and try to play another IPL. It would be a gift from me, won't be easy on the body," Dhoni had said in the post-match interview after winning the IPL 2023 final.
