Meaning Of The Name 'Kanta'

The word ‘Kanta’ means ‘beloved’ or ‘dearest’. This Ekadashi fast is especially observed by those who wish to invite love, beauty, and harmony into their lives and relationships. On the other hand, ‘Kamada’ means ‘the one who fulfills desires’.

Mythological Story

According to a story described in the Padma Purana, a Gandharva named Lalit lived in the kingdom of Ratnapura with his wife, Lavanyavati. Lalit used to perform music in the royal court. One day, lost in thoughts of his wife, he made a mistake during his performance. The king, angered by his distraction, cursed him to be born as a demon.

A grief-stricken Lavanyavati sought help from Sage Shringi, who advised her to observe the fast of Kanta Ekadashi with full devotion. She sincerely observed the fast, and through the power of her penance, Lalit was freed from the curse.

  • On the eve of the fast, consume a sattvic (pure and light) meal and spend the night remembering and meditating on Lord Vishnu.
  • On the day of Ekadashi, take a bath in the morning and make a vow to observe the fast.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu by offering Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, a lit lamp, and sacred food (bhog) as part of the rituals.
  • Observe a full-day fast—either by consuming only fruits (phalahaari) or by keeping a Nirjala (waterless) fast.
  • Stay awake throughout the night and engage in bhajans and kirtans.
  • On the day of Dwadashi, complete the fast by offering food to a Brahmin or someone in need.

Scientific Perspective

Fasting gives rest to the digestive system and helps reduce toxins in the body. Practices like concentration, self-reflection, and meditation enhance mental peace and energy. The use of tulsi, holy water, and incense during the fast purifies the environment, which scientifically promotes positive energy.

On this day, mantra chanting, spiritual practices, and the recitation of Vishnu or Lakshmi mantras are believed to be effective for fulfilling special desires.
