Why Is The Kumbh Mela Held?

There are many beliefs and historical accounts regarding the organisation of the Kumbh Mela. However, according to religious tradition, the origin of Kumbh is linked to the ancient legend of the Samudra Manthan. It is said that when the gods and demons churned the ocean together, 14 precious treasures emerged, one of which was the Amrit Kalash. The primary purpose of the Samudra Manthan was to obtain this nectar. Finally, Lord Dhanvantari appeared carrying the Amrit Kalash.

After the emergence of the Amrit Kalash, a dispute arose between the gods and demons over its possession. To protect the nectar from the demons, Indra’s son Jayant fled with the pot. The demons chased him in pursuit of the nectar. While fleeing, drops of nectar fell at four locations on Earth: Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar, and Nashik. These places are therefore regarded as the holiest spots on Earth.

It is believed that during the Kumbh Mela, the waters of the rivers at these locations are imbued with divine nectar-like qualities, making them sacred for spiritual purification and blessings.
