Meaning Of Hartalika Teej

The term Hartalika is derived from two Sanskrit words—‘Harat’ (abduction) and ‘Aalika’ (female friend). The legend behind the festival narrates how Goddess Parvati's friends abducted her to prevent her from being married off to someone else, as she was determined to marry Lord Shiva. This symbolic act forms the basis of the Hartalika Teej celebration.
