Every Bengali home on Mahalaya rises early in the morning, even before the sun. The event is related with several activities and ceremonies. During this day, certain Hindu households perform the pitru tarpan ritual, in which they offer prayers and offerings (pind-daan) to the dead ancestors on the banks of the Ganga.
