Manipur: 11-Year-Old Injured After Miscreants Barge Into Her House, Open Fire

Class-3 student, Amina, sustained bullet injuries on her back and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the state capital Imphal.

An 11-year-old girl was shot at by unidentified miscreants at Kwatha village in violence-hit Manipur's Chandel district, which borders the worst-affected Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. The Class-3 student, Amina, sustained bullet injuries on her back and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the state capital, Imphal.

The girl was playing with her elder sister in the courtyard of her house on July 30 when the miscreants barged in and resorted to indiscriminate firing, leaving her seriously wounded. The girl was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where she underwent a couple of surgeries. While the girl is out of danger, she is still in extreme trauma.
No other people in the girl's house or village were injured in the attack. However, the incident has left the villagers perplexed as Kwatha village is mostly inhabited by people from the Muslim community, who have nothing to do with the ongoing ethnic clashes.

Firing and attacks continue unabated in the village.

Clashes broke out between Meitei and the Kuki tribe in May following the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.

Police have registered a case against unknown assailants. However, nobody has been arrested yet. At least 178 people have been admitted to the hospital where the minor girl is undergoing treatment since May this year. Most of the patients have sustained bullet injuries.

Violence continues to be reported in parts of Manipur, with houses being burnt and property vandalised. The concern for security forces has been the use of stolen weapons from the police in these attacks. Over 200 assault rifles, including AK-47s, 551 INSAS rifles, 406 carbines, 250 machine guns and nearly five lakh rounds of live ammunition have been reportedly looted from police armories and police stations.
