After Universities Sue Donald Trump, US Administration To Bring Out ‘Very Big’ Merit-Based Immigration Bill Soon

US President Donald Trump has said that he working a new immigration bill that will include a 'road to citizenship' to those who have received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme.

New Delhi: After taking out several restrictions on different types of visas for the United States, President Donald Trump has said that he is now working on a merit-based immigration system. A report by PTI says that Trump is working an executive order on immigration which will include a 'road to citizenship' for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme. According to the report the president has said that DACA will be part of a larger immigration bill. "It's going to be a very big bill, a very good bill, and a merit-based bill and it will include DACA, and I think people are going to be very happy," he said. The DACA is an immigration policy in the US that allows undocumented young people who have been brought to the country as children to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for a work permit in the U.S. After the president stated the plans for a new immigration bill in an interview with a news channel, the white house came out with a statement, "As the President announced today, he is working on an executive order to establish a merit-based immigration system to further protect US workers. Furthermore, the President has long said he is willing to work with the Congress on a negotiated legislative solution to DACA, one that could include citizenship, along with strong border security and permanent merit-based reforms." The statement further said, "This does not include amnesty. Unfortunately, Democrats have continually refused these offers as they are opposed to anything other than totally open borders," said the White House in a statement. New Immigration policy for students Recently, the US government has issued a new policy stating that international students may be forced to leave the country if their universities fully rely on online classes in the upcoming semester. According to a new policy announcement by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) foreign students studying in American universities will be either forced to leave the country or transfer to another college if their universities offer only online classes in the fall semester. The move will impact F-1 and M-1 visas used by foreign students. The statement issued by the ICE on July 6 says, ‘Non-immigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. Soon after, universities such as Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sued Trump and is seeking to block the new directive. In the case filed in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, The universities have said that the policy is against the Administrative Procedures Act. The government has earlier also suspended the H-1B visas and other work visas till the year-end.
