King Charles Coronation HIGHLIGHTS: Hello and welcome to ABP Live's blog to get the latest developments, breaking news, latest updates, and other developing stories pertaining to the Coronation ceremony of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Charles Philip will be crowned as the King of the United Kingdom on Saturday, May 6 in a grand royal ceremony, decades after the last crowing procession that took place in 1953. The Coronation ceremony will take place today at Westminster Abbey in London. The event marked almost seven decades since the last coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. After the ceremony, he will become the 40th monarch crowned at Westminster Abbey.

Huge crowds are gathering in central London ahead of the Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort as lavish displays of royal pageantry are expected, with processions planned on either side of the service at Westminster Abbey. Around 5,000 members of the armed forces are also arriving in London on specially chartered trains from places like Farnborough, Tring, and Aldershot, as per the BBC. Army, Navy, RAF, and commonwealth forces are all involved in the exercise.

According to the BBC, royal fans arrived in the early hours of the morning. A fan identified as Heidi Roberts, from Surrey, wore a bright red, blue and white wig and said she’s come for the “happy atmosphere”. “Just being with the crowd and having something to celebrate," she said, as quoted by the BBC. “I think we’re all mourning the Queen, and I think it’s a bit of a hangover from that," she added.

Charles Philip will be crowned on the Coronation Chair. According to the news agency AFP, the chair was made in 1300-1301. It enclosed the Stone of Scone or Stone of Destiny, which was used for centuries to crown the kings of Scotland. The stone was temporarily stolen in an audacious raid by Scottish students in 1950, who accidentally broke it in two, as reported by AFP.

In 1996, with nationalist sentiment rising, it was symbolically returned to Scotland but it is coming back from Edinburgh Castle to Westminster for the coronation.

74-year-old Charles Philip Arthur George succeeded as the United Kingdom's new King after her mother, Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September, last year. He had been the Prince of Wales, the title reserved for future British kings-in-waiting, for the longest term in the history of the UK's monarchy. The Prince's mother was proclaimed Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 25, when her father, King George VI, died aged 56 on 6 February 1952. On The Queen's accession to the throne, Prince Charles - as the Sovereign's eldest son - became heir apparent at the age of three. Charles waited for the longest ever period to be crowned as the King of the UK.

Around 2,200 guests from across the globe will be attending the event at Westminster Abbey where the coronation will take place. The guest list includes royals, the head of state of several nations, some special invitees, and others. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar is representing India in the coronation programme.

Notably, the attendees include several people from the Indian community who have been invited to grace the majestic ceremony. The statement by the palace read, "Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce further details on the ceremonial, celebratory and community events that will take place over the Coronation Weekend between Saturday 6th and Monday 8th May 2023."

"The Service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. As previously announced, the Service will reflect the Monarch's role today and look towards the future while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry," read Buckingham Palace's release.

Archbishop Of Canterbury Delivers Sermon

Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury delivers a sermon at the coronation ceremony. “What is given today is for the gain of all, for Jesus Christ announced a kingdom in which the poor and oppressed are free from the chains of injustice, the blind see the bruised and broken-hearted and healed that kingdom, sets the aims of all righteous government, all authority. The kingdom also sets the means of all government and authority. For Jesus doesn’t grasp or hold onto status,” he said.

“The king of kings, Jesus Christ, was anointed not to be served, but to serve. He creates the unchangeable law of good authority that with the privilege of power comes the duty to serve. Service is love in action. We see love in our care for the most vulnerable, the way we encourage the young in the conversation of the natural world,” he added.
