Gaza Hunger Crisis Worsens, UN Says Hamas-War Left Many Starving As Attacks Continue

Most of the people in Gaza have been driven from their homes, and residents have said that it is impossible to find refuge or food in the enclave.

As the United Nations General Assembly prepares to vote on Tuesday on an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the aid agencies have said that hunger is worsening among Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, as reported by news agency Reuters.

After the U.S. vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire on Friday, more civilians have died in Israel's assault on Gaza. According to Reuters, most of the people in Gaza have been driven from their homes, and residents have said that it is impossible to find refuge or food in the enclave.

The U.N. World Food Programme has claimed that half of the population is starving. "Hunger stalks everyone," UNRWA, the U.N. body responsible for Palestinian refugees, said on X.

The people of Gaza stated that people forced to flee repeatedly were dying of hunger and cold as well as the bombardment, describing the looting of aid trucks and skyrocketing prices, as reported by Reuters.

Israel has said that its directions to people to move are among the measures it is taking to protect civilians as it aims to root out Hamas militants who killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages in an Oct. 7 attack on Israel, Reuters reported, citing Israeli tallies. Notably, about 100 hostages have since been freed.

As per the Gaza health ministry, Israel's retaliatory assault has killed 18,205 people and wounded nearly 50,000, as reported by Reuters. On Tuesday, the General Assembly is likely to pass a draft resolution that mirrors the language of one that was vetoed by the US last week.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has announced that the Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 18,000 as a result of the Hamas-Israel conflict since October 7.

Meanwhile, Speaking at a press conference, Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qedra said on Monday that the bodies of 208 dead Palestinians were transferred to hospitals in the Gaza Strip during the past 24 hours, and 416 Palestinians were wounded in the Israeli raids, Xinhua news agency reported.

As of Monday, a total of 18,205 Palestinians have been killed and 49,645 others wounded in the Hamas-Israel conflict, according to Al-Qedra.

Last week on Friday, the US vetoed a United Nations resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in war-torn Gaza. The resolution has been backed by almost all other Security Council members and dozens of other nations.

Calling it a terrible day, the supporters had warned of more civilian deaths and destruction as the war enters its third month, according to news agency AP. The vote in the 15-member council was 13-1, with the United Kingdom abstaining, as reported by AP. France and Japan were among those supporting the call for a cease-fire.
