'When Her Husband Began To Sink...': Nitish Kumar's Comments On Rabri Devi Draws Tejashwi's Ire

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, angered by opposition's criticism of girls' education, attacked former CM Rabri Devi, sparking a heated exchange.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar lost his cool on Friday as a member of the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal flagged the "inadequate number" of girls' schools in her area.

During the proceedings of the state legislative council, RJD MLC Urmila Thakur expressed her dissatisfaction over the reply by state education minister Sunil Kumar to her questioned raised in the House.

The MLC put forward the example of her Begusarai district where "girls are deprived" of education in many villages as "reaching the nearest school requires them to walk four to five kilometres".

Nitish Kumar Looses Temper

Reacting sharply to the claim, Kumar who was sitting in his seat said, "Do you people even know what we have done for girls' education? Village girls hardly went to schools in Bihar until we came to power."

"Sir please do not say that," Thakur replied, adding "I, too hail from a village. I belong to an older generation, yet I did complete my schooling."

Bihar CM Attacks Rabri Devi

Kumar went on to lash out at the opposition saying, "You have no idea what has been done by us for women. You may be women yourselves but what has been your contribution?"

He then launched an attack on former CM Rabri Devi who is now the leader of the opposition in the Upper House.

"When her husband began to sink, he installed his wife (in the CM’s post),” Kumar said referring to the circumstances in which Rabri Devi had succeeded her husband Lalu Prasad, the RJD president, as the chief minister.

Prasad had made his wife the chief minister of the state when he was forced to resign facing an arrest warrant in a fodder scam case.

Tejashwi Yadav Hits Back

Hitting back at Kumar, RJD leader and Rabri Devi's son, Tejashwi Yadav reminded that she was the first female CM of Bihar and is older than him.

"CM Nitish Kumar should remember that Rabri Devi is the first female CM of Bihar...There is nothing much to comment anything on him. His deteriorating health signals that he is no longer able to run Bihar," Yadav said.

"The designation of CM has dignity. The language which he used for Rabri Devi is not good," he added.
