West Bengal Violence: CBI Begins Investigation With Visits To Birbhum, Diamond Harbour, Nadia Districts

Bengal Post-Poll Violence: Acting on the Calcutta High Court order, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched an inquiry into the post-election violence in West Bengal on Thursday. Separate CBI teams are visiting different districts to investigate the case. A CBI team went to Bhatpara, whereas, other teams are expected to visit Birbhum, Diamond Harbour, Sandeshkhali, and Nadia on Thursday.

Biswajit Sarkar told the CBI that the Kolkata Police threatened him to not mention names of influential TMC MLAs and leaders involved. He also claimed that these officers of the Kolkata Police crime branch wanted his mother to sign a white paper.

He said he will no longer let Kolkata police inside his house. Kolkata Police then returned from the spot, and the special CBI investigation team took Biswajit Sarkar to the house of the deceased BJP worker.

The CBI team has been provided tight security by the central forces. Biswajit Sarkar has reportedly shown the officials all the concerned places while also providing documents related to the Abhijit Sarkar murder case.

The crime branch of the Kolkata Police's espionage department was investigating the case before CBI took over.

Kolkata Police has so far arrested 8 accused in the BJP worker's murder case.

The central agency has shifted its team from Kolkata to the spots where the violent incidents took place across the state.

Earlier this month, the Calcutta High Court directed a CBI investigation into the incidents of post-election violence in West Bengal under the supervision of the court.

The High Court also directed the State Government to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), for the cases related to violence. The High Court also observed that the West Bengal government's contention that the Election Commission was responsible for the violence, as the police were under it due to the model code of conduct, was "worthy of outright dismissal".
