WATCH: 2-Year-Old Child Falls Into Open Manhole In Mumbai's Goregaon; Rescue Operation Underway

The child has been inside the drain for nearly nine hours now. Rescue operations to bring up the child are underway.

New Delhi: In a gut-wrenching incident in Mumbai, a two-year-old child fell into an open gutter on Wednesday night. The toddler named Divyansh Singh fell into a manhole at around 10 pm in Ambedkar Nagar area. A CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced which shows the little one roaming around at night all by himself on the roadside. It shows him walking behind an electrical enclosure box and falling suddenly into the open manhole. As per locals, Divyansh left his mother's hand and went to play on road. But unfortunately there was this open manhole nearby and the little boy slipped into it. His mother soon came to the spot to check on him but could find him nowhere.  Later it was found via the CCTC camera footage that he had fallen into the manhole. The water-flow inside the drain was apparently high because of the heavy rainfall. Fire department and police force are conducting the rescue operation. So far the child has not been located. As per reports the manhole is about three to four feet deep, which further opens into a larger sewer about 10 feet deep. Due to the torrential rainfall the city is facing, water-logging has become a rampant issue paving way for such mishaps. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has come under widespread criticism for the negligence in handling the issues of open manholes and sewers. During the last bout of heavy rainfall, two 12-year-old boys on Monday died after falling into a rainwater-filled pit in Titwala area of Thane district. The child has been inside the drain for more than 14 hours now. Rescue operations to locate the child are underway. News agency ANI shared the video of the incident on Twitter. Last month, a two-year-old child named Fatehveer Singh who fell into a 150-foot-deep abandoned borewell in Sangrur Punjab, was brought out dead after days of rescue operation, attracting nationwide attention and drawing criticism for negligence of the district administration towards open borewells.
