Vijay Diwas 2020: PM Modi Lights Up 'Swarnim Vijay Mashaal' To Mark 50th Anniversary Of India's Victory In 1971 War

Vijay Diwas 2020: As India marks the 50th anniversary of its victory in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the martyrs of the war at the National War Memorial and lit the Swarnim Vijay Mashaal. Also Read | Vijay Diwas 2020: 49 Years Ago, 93,000 Pakistani Soldiers Surrendered To India; Here’s All You Need To Know He also paid tribute to the fallen soldiers at National War Memorial on the 50th-anniversary of the 1971 India-Pakistan war Four 'Victory Mashaals' (flames) lit from the Eternal Flame of National War Memorial will be carried to various parts of the country including to villages of Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra awardees of 1971 war. "Soil from the villages of these awardees and from areas where major battles were fought in 1971 are being brought to the National War Memorial (NWM)," a statement had said earlier. The prime minister was  received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at NWM on Wednesday.  The prime minister, chief of defence staff and tri-service chiefs laid wreaths and pay homage to the fallen soldiers. Vijay Diwas:  Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on December 16 to mark India's triumph in liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. In one of the fastest and shortest campaigns of military history, a new nation was born as a result of the swift campaign undertaken by the Indian Army. After facing defeat in the 1971 war, the then Army Chief of Pakistan General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with his 93,000 troops, surrendered to allied forces which also comprised of Indian Army personnel.
