Supreme Court Extends Interim Bail In Money Laundering Case To Satyendar Jain On Medical Ground

The Supreme Court extended interim bail to former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case on medical grounds till September 1.

The Supreme Court on Friday extended interim bail to former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case on medical grounds till September 1, as reported by news agency ANI. Last month, the apex court extended interim bail to Satyendar Jain on medical grounds.

Satyendar Jain Money Laundering Case: What Happened So Far?

The top court on May 26 granted interim bail to Jain for six weeks on medical grounds, saying a citizen has a right to receive treatment of his choice in a private hospital at his own expense. Earlier the Supreme Court on July 10 extended the interim bail of Jain in the money laundering case on medical grounds.

The ED had arrested Jain on May 30 last year on the charge of laundering money through four companies allegedly linked to him. The agency had arrested Jain in the aftermath of a CBI FIR registered against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was granted regular bail by the trial court on September 6, 2019, in the case registered by the CBI.

A bench of justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh directed senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Jain, to submit the medical reports to Additional Solicitor General S V Raju. Upon the submission of these, the bail was extended today. Prior to his bail, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed its response in the apex court. In the response, the ED said that Jain has been using his influence in Delhi to furnish false reports about his illness from the hospital.

The agency further alleged that the former Delhi minister submitted a report of LNJP hospital to the apex court, which was previously rejected by the Delhi High Court.

The ED also said that in cases linked to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002, bail is granted on the ground of illness only when there is a danger to life. Jain's health check-up should be done in a hospital, which is not under the Delhi government, the investigation agency further stated in its response.

In May, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal met Satyendar Jain who is under treatment at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP) in the national capital due to a spine injury. The former minister was hospitalised after he collapsed in the Tihar jail's bathroom. Kejriwal had blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Jain's condition remarking that "a dictator is bent on killing" the former Delhi health minister who worked day and night to provide good treatment and good health to people in the national capital.
