Two Back-To-Back Earthquakes Jolt Nicobar Islands, Third In Tally For This Week

Two earthquakes struck the Nicobar Islands in less than an hour on Sunday afternoon. The first earthquake hit the islands around 3 pm, followed by another at 4 pm.

The Nicobar Islands were shaken on Sunday afternoon by two simultaneous earthquakes that occurred in less than an hour. The first quake hit the islands at around 3 pm and another at 4 pm, according to the National Center For Seismology (NCS). The first earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter Scale struck Island at approximately 2:59 pm, followed by another quake of 5.3 magnitude at around 4 pm.

As of now, no casualties or collateral damage have been reported as a result of the earthquake.

On April 6, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter Scale struck Andaman and Nicobar Islands 140 kilometres east of Portblair. There were no reported casualties from the quake.

On January 31, an earthquake struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Andaman Sea. There were no reports of damage. The National Center for Seismology reported a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in the Andaman Sea. The earthquake struck around 3:40 am, according to the National Center for Seismology. According to the NCS, it was 77 kilometres in depth.

On April 3, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 jolted Northwestern Papua New Guinea. The temblor struck 97 kilometres from the coastal town of Wewak at a depth of 62 kilometres shortly after 4:00 am, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Even though a strong earthquake struck the coastal region, no Tsunami warning was issued, according to the news agency AFP.
