Mumbai Court Asks Mamata Banerjee To Appear Before It On March 2 For 'Insulting National Anthem'

In a setback to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, a Mumbai court has issued an order against her to appear before the court on March 2, 2022 for insulting National Anthem.

New Delhi: A metropolitan magistrate Court of Mumbai on Wednesday directed West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to appear before the court on March 2, 2022, after Mumbai BJP unit secretary Vivekanand Gupta filed a complaint against her stating that she insulted the National Anthem after she was seen standing up midway of the national anthem during a press conference in Mumbai.

The video that went viral after the press conference shows that Mamata allegedly disrespected the national anthem after she was seen standing up midway of the national anthem during a press conference in Mumbai.

The complaint, which was filed in 25th Court, Mazgaon at Sewree under section 3 of Prevention of Insult to National honour Act 1971, against Mamata was filed by a Mumbai BJP leader for "showing utter disrespect to the national anthem" by allegedly singing it while in sitting position and then "abruptly stopping after 4 or 5 verses," according to a report by news agency ANI after the incident.

While addressing a press conference in Mumbai she sang the national anthem, but stopped midway and concluded by saying "Jai Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, CM Mamata was on Wednesday re-elected as the TMC chairperson, a top party official said.

As per TMC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, Banerjee was declared elected without a contest as no other leader entered the fray.

“A total of 48 proposers and seconders had submitted nominations in favour of Mamata Banerjee. As there was no other nomination for the post of chairperson, Mamata Banerjee has been re-elected unopposed,” Chatterjee, the returning officer for the organisational polls, said.

Today, Mamata has said she will contest the 2024 general elections from Uttar Pradesh.

"In Uttar Pradesh, I am not going to contest Assembly polls but I am going to support SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on 8th Feb 2022; we (TMC) will contest from UP in Lok Sabha polls (in 2024): West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee," said Mamata according to the Tweet by news agency ANI.
