Modi Govt ‘Murdering Democracy’, Trying To Govern Delhi Through 'Backdoor': Delhi Dy CM Sisodia
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said the Centre has passed a law in the Cabinet to snatch power of Delhi's elected government and give it to Centre-appointed Lieutenant Governor.
New Delhi: Alleging Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is making desperate bids to murder constitutional democracy, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday claimed the Union Cabinet has cleared a proposal to give more powers to the Lieutenant Governor and accused the Centre of trying to govern the national capital through the “backdoor”.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said the Centre has passed a law in the Cabinet to snatch power of Delhi's elected government and give it to Centre-appointed Lieutenant Governor.
“The Delhi Government will not have the power to take its own decisions. The BJP wants to govern Delhi through backdoor as people chose not to elect them in three consecutive elections,” he added.
Describing the bill as the murder of constitutional democracy, Sisodia also alleged the Centre has secretly worked to get the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill cleared, thereby subverting the mandate of a democratically-elected government.
Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet approved proposed amendments to the Government of NCT of Delhi Act, which will give more power to the Lieutenant Governor.

As per the amendments, an elected government has to approach the Lieutenant Governor with legislative and administrative proposals.
There is, however, no official word in this regard yet.
