Kolkata Law College Security Guard Arrested In Rape Case, 4th Arrest So Far

The 24-year-old complainant has alleged that she was gang-raped on June 25 within the premises of the Kolkata Law College.

In a development in the ongoing investigation into the alleged gangrape of a first-year law student, police have arrested a security guard from South Calcutta Law College, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to four. The 24-year-old complainant has alleged that she was gang-raped on June 25 within the premises of the college.

According to IANS, Kolkata police said, "Guard of the Law College, Pinaki Banerjee (55) has also been arrested in the case."

"The security guard was arrested this morning after we found that his replies were incoherent. His presence at the college has been captured in the CCTV installed in the college," an officer said, as per PTI.

Earlier, three individuals were taken into custody — including a former student of the college, who has been identified as the prime accused, and two current senior students. Authorities had launched a manhunt soon after the victim filed her complaint, leading to swift action and the latest arrest of the guard, who was reportedly on duty at the time of the crime.

The disturbing incident has sent shockwaves across the city, raising serious concerns about campus safety.

Kolkata Rape Case

The 24-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted after she had visited the campus to submit a form for an upcoming examination. According to her complaint, she was detained in the student union room even after completing her task. She alleged that a former student—currently working as a contractual non-teaching staff member and practicing criminal lawyer—assaulted her after she rejected his proposal for marriage. During the attack, two current students allegedly stood guard and filmed the incident on their mobile phones, as per a report on PTI.

In her written complaint, the survivor further alleged that the guard ignored her pleas for help during the incident.
