Landslide Hits Shiradi Ghat, Disrupts Bengaluru-Mangaluru Traffic; Rains Continue Across Karnataka

Vehicular movement along the vital Shiradi Ghat stretch of National Highway 75 has been suspended following a landslide near Marehanalli, triggered by relentless rainfall. The incident, which took place in Karnataka’s Hassan district, has brought traffic between Bengaluru and Mangaluru to a standstill.

Authorities from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in coordination with district officials, have launched debris clearance operations to restore connectivity.

For motorists traveling from Bengaluru to Mangaluru, traffic is being rerouted via the Bengaluru–Hassan–Belur–Charmadi Ghat corridor, reported Times of India. Those journeying in the reverse direction—from Mangaluru to Bengaluru—have been advised to take the Sampaje or Charmadi Ghat routes.

Schools Shut, Warnings Issued Amid Heavy Rainfall

With the southwest monsoon active over interior Karnataka and parts of the coastal belt, authorities in both Karnataka and Kerala have declared holidays for schools in several rain-affected districts. Safety advisories have been issued, particularly for residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas in the Malnad region, which continues to receive intense rainfall.

Weather Forecast: Rain and Winds to Persist

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds (30–50 kmph) is expected in parts of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga. Other districts, including Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Mysuru, Tumakuru, and Kodagu, are likely to experience light to moderate rain with gusty winds.

In Bengaluru, the IMD forecasts a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall and wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph. Temperatures are expected to range between 21°C and 29°C.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas, and follow updates from local disaster management teams.
