India Jumps 5 Places To 52nd Rank In Global Innovation Index 2019

India was ranked at 57th slot in last year's Index, while, making major gains this year, it has jumped to the 52nd slot.

New Delhi:India jumped five places in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019 positioning itself at rank 52, as per a report released on Wednesday.  It was ranked 57th in the Index of the year 2018. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal released the Global Innovation Index rankings in New Delhi on Wednesday. The GII rankings are published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD and the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners. “We are happy that India has made a significant progress to 52nd rank in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2019. We are happy that culture of innovation is coming to the centre-stage,”Piyush Goyal’s office tweeted. “We will continue our efforts to reach upwards of top 50 ranks in the GII that our PM Narendra Modi  ji set a goal of, and we want to assure that India is well poised to focus on research and development,” his office added. “Global Innovation Index 2019: India makes major gains. Switzerland , Sweden , U.S., Netherlands , U.K. are the world’s innovation leaders.” The World Intellectual Property Organisation said in a tweet. Now in its 12th edition, the GII ranks 129 economies based on 80 indicators, ranging from intellectual property filing rates to mobile-application creation, education spending and scientific and technical publications. Switzerland retained its number-one spot on the index. Other economies in the top 10 are: Sweden, the US, the Netherlands, the UK, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Germany and Israel.
