Delhi Violence: Suspended AAP Leader Tahir Hussain Sent To 7-Day Police Custody

Hussain was arrested by the Delhi Police on Thursday after a special court rejected his application seeking relief.

New Delhi: A court here on Friday sent suspended Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain to seven days police custody in connection with the recent violence in Delhi's northeast area and killing of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer. He was produced at the residence of Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Kumar Rampuri, a day after his arrest. During the course of proceedings, the police sought his custody, which was allowed by the judge. Hussain was arrested by the Delhi Police on Thursday after a special court rejected his application seeking relief. The councillor is in the eye of a major controversy for his alleged involvement in the recent violence in northeast Delhi and the killing of IB staffer, Ankit Sharma, whose body was recovered from a drain near his house. The police had registered a case against him on a complaint filed by deceased IB staffer's father. Hussain, who was absconding, moved an application before the Rouse Avenue Court, contending that he was willing to join the investigation and wanted to surrender in the case. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vishal Pahuja, however, rejected the application saying that it has no jurisdiction to entertain it. On anticipation of being arrested after the case was lodged, Hussain had earlier moved an application seeking anticipatory bail. The application has now turned infructuous as he has already been arrested.
