Delhi Police Protest: Daylong Agitation Of Cops Ends After Assurance; Here's All You Need To Know

Several hundreds of police personnel and their family members hit the streets to protest against the assault of some of their colleagues by the advocates.

The agitating cops made five demands to the force, including the setting up of Police Welfare Association
Special Commissioner Satish Golcha was the fifth officer to request the protesting cops to join their duties

New Delhi: The Delhi police personnel who staged an unprecedented protest against the recent incidents of violence against their colleagues by lawyers, ended their demonstration after eleven hours of continuous sit-in and sloganeering. Several hundreds of police personnel and their family members hit the streets to protest against the assault of some of their colleagues by the advocates. Demands of the agitating cops: Their protest ended after all their demands were accepted by their seniors. The agitating cops made five demands to the force:
  • There should be a Police Welfare Association to deal with the grievances of police personnel
  • Revoking the suspension orders issued to some officers after Saturday's clashes
  • Challenge the high court order in the Supreme Court
  • No action against protesting police personnel when they join duties
  • Deal lawyers misbehaving with the police as per the law.
Delhi Police also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25,000 each for the cops injured in the clashes with lawyers at the Tis Hazari court premises on November 2. A review petition will be filed in Delhi High Court regarding the Court's order on Tis Hazari Court incident. Support by other police associations: The protest got a boost when Haryana Police Association, Bihar Police Association and Tamil Nadu Police Association extended their support to the agitating Delhi Police personnel. Himachal Pradesh Indian Police Service (IPS) Association also condemned violence against police Personnel at the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi and expressed complete solidarity with Police personnel in Delhi. Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijan reviews situation: After almost nine hours of their protest, Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal reviewed the situation on Tuesday evening, and announced a “suitable” ex-gratia to be given to the injured officers. Baijal advised the Commissioner of Police, Delhi that senior officers should visit the injured policemen to boost their morale and comfort their families. He also announced that suitable ex-gratia will be given to the injured officers of Delhi Police. The Lieutenant-Governor (LG) also directed the Chief Secretary to ensure that best possible medical treatment is provided to the injured advocates and policemen, free of cost. He also appealed for harmony and maintenance of law and order. Address by Special Commissioner Satish Golcha: After the review of the situation by the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijan, Special Commissioner Satish Golcha told the agitating personnel "We will provide the best treatment to the cops injured during the clashes and also give an ex-gratia of Rs 25,000 each to the injured cops." Golcha also said that a case has been registered in the Saket Court incident, in which a lawyer was seen assaulting a policeman on Monday. "I request you all to end the agitation as a disciplined force. I want to assure you on behalf of our Commissioner (Amulya Patnaik) and request you to join your duties," he said. Five officers urged protesters to call off agitation: Golcha was the fifth officer to request the protesting cops to join their duties. Earlier in the day, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik himself tried to convince the protesting cops, but was booed by them instead. After Patnaik, Joint Commissioners of Police Devesh Srivastava and Rajesh Khurana also tried to pacify the protesting personnel, but they were also jeered.
