Delhi: 26 Dead After Massive Fire Breaks Out In Building Near Mundka Metro Station, Some Still Trapped

The Delhi Police on preliminary inquiry found it to be a three-storey commercial building generally used for providing office space for the companies.

New Delhi: As many as 26 people have been killed after a massive fire broke out in a commercial building near the Mundka metro station on the Green Line in west Delhi on Friday evening, the officials said, ANI reported. The fire broke out in a building near pillar number 544, Mundka metro station, the officials said, adding the process of dousing the flames is underway. A senior officer said the police reached the spot after receiving information about the blaze, broke the windows of the building, rescued people and got the injured admitted in a hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolenses to the bereaved families. "Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Delhi. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery," he tweeted.

"26 bodies recovered in the fire at 3-storey commercial building which broke out this evening near Delhi's Mundka metro station," news agency ANI quoted Sunil Choudhary, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Delhi Fire Service as saying.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), Sameer Sharma, said the preliminary investigation has revealed that the three-storey commercial building was generally used for providing office space to companies.

According to Delhi Police, some persons are still trapped inside the three-storey commercial building.

“The fire initiated from the first floor of the building, which is an office of a CCTV cameras and router manufacturing company,” the Delhi Police said.

Even President of India Ram Nath Kovind extended condolences to the bereaved families. "Distressed by the tragic fire accident at a building near Mundka Metro Station in Delhi. My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish for speedy recovery of the injured," Kovind tweeted.

The Delhi Police also informed the owner of the company is in police custody.

The Delhi Police further said there are a total of nine fire brigades present at the spot and are trying to control the situation, adding ambulance facility is also available at the spot for providing immediate medical assistance to the victim.
