'After Six Hrs Healthy Baby Girl Was Born': Doctors Aid Childbirth Over WhatsApp Call In J-K's Keran

New Delhi: With airlift ruled impossible due to snowfall, a pregnant mother with a history of labour problems in Jammu and Kashmir's rural Keran was supported by doctors in delivering a healthy baby through WhatsApp call, news agency PTI reported.

"On Friday night, we received a patient in labour at the Keran PHC (primary health centre) with history of complicated delivery with eclampsia, prolonged labour and episiotomy," Block Medical Officer of Kralpora Dr Mir Mohammad Shafi was quoted by PTI in its report.

Because Keran was blocked off from the rest of Kupwara district during the winter, an air evacuation was necessary to transport the patient to a hospital with maternity capabilities.

The authorities were unable to arrange an air evacuation due to continuous snowfall on Thursday and Friday, leading the medical team at the Keran PHC to seek an alternate method of assisting in the birth, PTI reported.

"The patient was induced (into labour) and after six hours a healthy baby girl was born. Currently both the baby and the mother are under observation and doing fine,” Dr Shafi was quoted by PTI in its report.
