Schools in the national capital will reopen for classes 9 to 12 from Monday after a spurt in COVID-19 cases had led to their closure in December, even as stakeholders debated the continuing of hybrid teaching and learning mode.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) had decided to reopen higher education institutions and coaching centres along with schools for classes 9-12 from February 7. The panel also decided to resume classes from nursery to 8 from February 14.

While the Centre has dropped the mandatory parental consent for students to physically attend schools from its guidelines and left it to the states, the Delhi government has decided to continue with it.

There is no cap of 50 percent student strength and the schools will be free to decide the proportion of students based on their infrastructure so that the Covid protocols are followed.

Schools in the city were briefly reopened before being closed again on December 28 last year in view of the third wave of COVID-19 driven by the Omicron variant.

The Centre had said the districts having less than five percent COVID-19 positivity rate can move in the direction of reopening schools but it is up to the state governments to take a call in this regard.

Delhi on Sunday reported 1,410 fresh COVID-19 cases and 14 deaths, while the positivity rate dropped to 2.45 per cent, according to data shared by the health department.

With this, the national capital's case count increased to 18,43,933 and the death toll climbed to 25,983 the latest health bulletin stated.

The number of COVID-19 tests conducted a day ago stood at 57,549, it said.

Delhi had on Saturday reported 1,604 cases with a positivity rate of 2.87 per cent, and 17 deaths.

The number of daily cases in Delhi has been on the decline after touching the record high of 28,867 on January 13.

The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14, the highest during the ongoing wave of the pandemic. It took 10 days for daily cases to drop below the 10,000-mark.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Sunday reported 9,666 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the state's infection tally to 78,03,700, while the death of 66 persons took the toll to 1,43,074

A total of 25,175 patients were discharged during the day, which raised the recovery count to 75,38,611, it said.

There are 1,18,076 active cases in the state now.

With 1,44,755 tests conducted during the day, the overall test count rose to 7,55,54,798.

No new case of the Omicron variant of the virus was detected in the state on Sunday.

Mumbai reported 536 new cases and three deaths. This took its total case count to 10,50,455 and fatality figure to 16,661.

Notably, Kerala saw a drop in daily coronavirus cases with 26,729 fresh infections being reported on Sunday, taking the total number of those affected by the disease to 62.71 lakh.

The COVID toll mounted to 58,255 with 22 additional deaths.

The state had recorded 33,538 cases yesterday and 38,684 on Friday.

"Currently, there are 3,29,348 active COVID-19 cases in the state out of which only three per cent are admitted to hospitals," the health department said in a release, adding that the state has tested 88,098 samples in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, 49,261 people recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours pushing the total recoveries in the state to 58,83,023.
