This day is celebrated to draw attention towards a problem that affects even developed and industrialized countries. Child poverty encompasses not just a lack of basic requirements like food and fresh water, but also a lack of access to high-quality medical care, education, and nutrition. Approximately 356 million children live in severe poverty, as per reports from UNICEF. They are deprived of housing, high-quality healthcare, and clean water. UNICEF, however, asserts that "children living in poverty are those who endure deprivation of the material, spiritual, and emotional resources required to be alive, develop, and flourish." This goes beyond monetary items.
It is surprising that although the United States is a developed nation, in 2018, approximately 11.9 million children lived in poverty there. Additionally, it was shown that racial and age differences are associated with child poverty. For instance, children of colour make up over 73% of the poorest children in America.
In 1987, the first commemoration of "World Day to Overcome Poverty" took place in Paris, France and in 2008, the International Committee for the observance of this day was established.
