Child Poverty Day 2022: History, Significance, And All That You need To Know

Child poverty encompasses not just a lack of basic requirements like food and fresh water, but also a lack of access to high-quality medical care, education, and nutrition.

New Delhi: Every year October 17 is celebrated as Child Poverty Day or International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This day is celebrated to draw attention towards a problem that affects even developed and industrialized countries. Child poverty encompasses not just a lack of basic requirements like food and fresh water, but also a lack of access to high-quality medical care, education, and nutrition. In order to empower youngsters and forge the nation's future, it is frequently the responsibility of government agencies to provide such essentials gratis.

Child Poverty Day 2022: History

Approximately 356 million children live in severe poverty, as per reports from UNICEF. They are deprived of housing, high-quality healthcare, and clean water. UNICEF, however, asserts that "children living in poverty are those who endure deprivation of the material, spiritual, and emotional resources required to be alive, develop, and flourish." This goes beyond monetary items.

It is surprising that although the United States is a developed nation, in 2018, approximately 11.9 million children lived in poverty there. Additionally, it was shown that racial and age differences are associated with child poverty. For instance, children of colour make up over 73% of the poorest children in America.

In 1987, the first commemoration of "World Day to Overcome Poverty" took place in Paris, France and in 2008, the International Committee for the observance of this day was established.

Child Poverty Day 2022: Effect of poverty on children

Children suffer a great deal as a result of poverty. Poor health, hunger, and even developmental disabilities might result from it. Children who experience poverty are also more likely to drop out of school and struggle to obtain employment resulting in child labour. Children who live in poverty might suffer long-term impacts. It may result in worse test results and graduation rates, and a higher chance of becoming involved with the criminal justice system. In other words, it robs children of their youth and potential.

Child Poverty Day 2022: Significance

This day should be observed because it throws attention to the factors that contribute to child poverty and suggests ways to combat it. Additionally, it compels the government to act quickly to end poverty. Due to the increased awareness of child poverty on this day, several organisations and affluent people give to charity to provide basics for disadvantaged children.
