India To Host Key Antarctic Meetings In Kochi From May 20-30
India to host the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM), the highest forum for governing the icy continent, at Kochi.
The ATCM and the 26th meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) are anticipated to be held in the city of Kerala from May 20-30, as per the official statement. The twin meetings are slated to be hosted by the Ministry of Earth Sciences through the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research.
"The hosting of the 46th ATCM and the 26th CEP meeting reflects India's growing role as a responsible global stakeholder in efforts to preserve Antarctica for future generations," Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences M Ravichandran said.
"Through open dialogue, collaboration, and consensus-building, India remains committed to upholding the principles of the Antarctic Treaty and contributing to the sustainable management of one of Earth's last pristine wilderness areas," Ravichandran also said.
SC To Hear Arguments On West Bengal Govt'S Suit Against CBI Probe On Thursday
The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday that it would deliberate on May 2 regarding the West Bengal government's lawsuit, which alleges that the CBI initiated its investigation without obtaining the necessary authorisation from the state.
Under Article 131 of the Constitution, the West Bengal government has brought an original suit against the Central government in the Supreme Court, contending that despite the state revoking its general consent for the CBI to probe cases within its jurisdiction, the agency has continued to register FIRs and proceed with investigations.
Article 131 outlines the Supreme Court's authority to adjudicate in disputes between the Centre and one or more states.
The West Bengal administration had withdrawn its "general consent" granted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on November 16, 2018, thereby revoking the agency's authority to conduct investigations or raids in the state.
During the court session convened by Justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, requested the court to schedule the hearing for 2 pm, citing an ongoing proceeding before a nine-judge Constitution bench.
