World Environment Day: History

The United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972, at the start of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. the signalled the beginning of international efforts to address pressing environmental issues. The first World Environment Day was held in 1974 and has since grown to become a major global event.

World Environment Day is critical in raising environmental awareness and encouraging action at the individual, community, and global levels, serving as a reminder of the importance to preserve and protect our environment for current and future generations. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development are among the issues that the day encourages governments, organisations, and individuals to address.

World Environment Day 2024: Theme

This year, the theme of World Environment Day is - Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience.'

"According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 per cent of the planet's land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 - without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050," the United Nations official website wrote.

World Environment Day 2024: Significance

This day holds immense significance when it comes to raising awareness about environment issues. With climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, pollution, that pose a significant threat to our planet, there has never been a more critical time to prioritise environmental conservation.
