New Delhi: The Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha every month is marked as Masik Shivratri Vrat where fast is observed to get the grace of Lord Shiva.

The Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of 'Falgun' month is celebrated as Badi Mahashivratri. This year, the mahashivratri will be celebrated on March 1. On this day, devotees of Bhole perform puja rituals and observe fast throughout the day to please the god and seek his blessings. On this day, Mother Parvati is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. 

According to the religious belief, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married on this day. At the same time, poeple also believe that on this day, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga. On this day, he is offered Bel leaves for his blessings. The scriptures mention some rules about plucking and offering Bel leaves.  

Rules to pluck Belpatra

1- There is a religious belief that belpatra should not be plucked on Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya tithi, Sankranti and on Mondays. It is believed that these dates are very dear to Lord Shiva so one can offer the leaves to the god on these dates. It is also said in the scriptures that if you do not get a belpatra to offer on the Shivling, then you can also use someone else's offered belpatra after washing it with water

2- Keep in mind that you should never break the belpatra in the evening 

3- Also keep in mind that you should break the belpatra one by one with the twig

4- Worship God in the mind before breaking the belpatra or break the belpatra only after remembering him. 

Offer a belpatra like this

1- Offer the belpatra upside down to Bholenath. Keep its smooth part on the inside, that is towards the Shivlinga 

2- The belpatra offering should not contain Vajra and Chakra

3- The belpatras offered to Bholeshankar should have 3 to 11 leaves. It is believed that more the leaves, more fruitful it is 

4- If you do not get Bel leaves to offer, then you can remember God after seeing a Bel tree 

5- It is believed that the name of Shiva should be written on the belpatra before offering
