WATCH: People Gather At Former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy's Residence To Pay Their Last Respects In Kottayam

Oommen Chandy passed away at 4:25 AM in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Congress party members and the public gathered at the residence of former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy to pay their last respect to him. The mortal remains of Oommen Chandy, who passed away in Bengaluru, were brought to his residence in Kottayam. The news of the demise was announced by Chandy's son on Tuesday who said in a Facebook post stating "Appa has passed away". However, the family members did not mention the exact cause of the death. 

According to ANI, “Kottayam: People gather outside former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy's residence to pay last respect to him. His mortal remains have been brought here.”

Oommen Chandy had been unwell for a long time and undergoing treatment in Bengaluru. Chandy also earlier received treatment at Berlin's Charite Hospital and NIMS Medicity in Thiruvananthapuram. 

Oommen Chandy served as the CM of Kerala twice. He was Kerala CM’s from 2004 to 2006 and 2011 to 2016. 

He had a five-decade-long political career. In 2022, Chandy became the longest-serving Kerala Assembly member. Chandy served for 18,728 days from his home constituency of Puthupally. He started his successful political career by winning state assembly elections at the age of 27 in 1970. He won 11 consecutive polls from Puthupally. 

Indian Youth Congress said, "We mourn the loss of former Kerala CM and Congress stalwart Shri Oommen Chandy. He was a champion of development, democracy and secularism. He inspired generations of young leaders with his dedication and charisma. We pray for his soul and his bereaved family. #OommenChandy."

In a tweet, PM Narendra Modi said, "In the passing away of Oommen Chandy Ji, we have lost a humble and dedicated leader who devoted his life to public service and worked towards the progress of Kerala. I recall my various interactions with him, particularly when we both served as Chief Ministers of our respective states, and later when I moved to Delhi. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this sorrowful hour. May his soul rest in peace."
