Swamy backs renaming of Allahabad as 'Prayag'

New Delhi [India], July 10 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on backed the proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayag.

Speaking to ANI, Swamy urged the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the matter.

"When our Prime Minister Modi was the Chief Minister, he had sent a recommendation to the Centre saying that Ahmedabad should be renamed Karnavati. Today he is the Prime Minister, even in one go, he can change the name. Why is he not doing that," he asked.

Swamy further demanded that the names given by Mughals and Britishers be changed and old names be brought back.

On Monday, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh put forth a request to Governor Ram Naik for renaming Allahabad as Prayag, ahead of the Kumbh Mela here next year.

Prayag is considered to be a holy place in Allahabad, where three main rivers flowing across the state, namely Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet.

It is also the venue for the Kumbh Mela, which is hosted once in every 12 years.

According to some media reports, the banners for the upcoming Kumbh Mela in 2019 mention the name of the city as Prayagraj instead of Allahabad. (ANI)
