G20 Film Festival To Open With Satyajit Ray's 'Pather Panchali' Today

The G20 Film Festival is set to open with Satyajit Ray's 1955 classic ‘Pather Panchali’.

New Delhi: The G20 Film Festival will commence with Satyajit Ray's 1955 classic ‘Pather Panchali’ on Wednesday. This will serve as a showcase for the strong and fruitful relationship between the G20 and invited nations in the film industry. Veteran actor Victor Banerjee and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant will inaugurate the event, which is being organised by the India International Centre (IIC) and the G20 Secretariat of the Ministry of External Affairs.

The G20 Film Festival is being hosted by the India International Centre (IIC) and the Ministry of External Affairs for 17 days. The event will be held from August 16 to September 2 at the IIC.

According to PTI, K N Shrivastava, the Director of the IIC, said in a statement, “In consonance with India’s presidency theme Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (One Earth, One Family, One Future), seminal award-winning feature films mirror issues and concerns of each country, navigating questions of identity, engaging with memories, and social polity, among others."

'The Cathedral' from the US, 'Decision to Leave' from South Korea and 'Noah Land' from Turkey are just a few of the films that will be shown during the festival. The G20 film festival will close with the British film 'Footprints On Water', directed by Nathalia Syam.

About Pather Panchali

Ray's first feature film ‘Pather Panchali’ was an adaptation of a 1929 Bengali book of the same name by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay.

One of the first Indian films to gain widespread recognition, ‘Pather Panchali’ was also significant in the formation of the parallel cinema cultural movement. At the third annual National Film Awards, it took home the trophy for Best Feature Film. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and was ranked among Time magazine's 100 finest films of all time in 2005.
